This has been a very well written, thought provoking thread.

This thread has actually generated some pretty well thought out, rational discussion. I'm impressed.

I guess I'd also describe myself as a waffler. I typically don't believe in a God, but admit that I could be wrong because there is no way to know for sure.

If I were to believe in a God it would be a more Deist view in which God created the universe and then left it alone.

If I'm honest with myself this is probably my stance as well. I want to and try to understand and believe in more however.

I'll answer it in the am. It's bedtime. Plus I've probably posted more in this thread tonight than I have in 6 months combined.

In my opinion, this where many theists would fall without the fear of Hell. Some do genuinely love the idea of God or their particular religion, but a lot of monotheists have for so long been taught the consequences of not believing they cant even consider the alternative.

I know that at the end of my "deconversion", the last thing keeping me hanging on was a fear of Hell.

I went to church going up, but not all that frequently. This fear of hell was never really instilled in me.

If there is a hell, I've already accepted the fact that I'll be partying it up down there with all the cool dudes that fricked shite up throughout history.

Hmm. For me, and (I think) for most, that's how it starts. I remember my freshman roommate going down the halls of Byrd Hall asking random Jack Daniels drinking folks "where you gone go when you die?" (Cringe).

I think a bigger fear for many (and me) is the notion that life does NOT have the meaning prescribed to them by their religion. Regardless of afterlife consequences.

Life is rather arbitrary and pointless in a world of unbelief--really not much more than a soldier ant, albeit more evolved.

I personally have no issue with life not having objective meaning. I have subjective meaning and purpose and that's all that matters.

Something messed with the dna along the way and created man as we we know it.

What meaning? And remember, I think you've been spot on throughout this thread, but this is where it gets challenging.

Do we exist just to procreate so that our offspring can live equally meaningless procreating lives?

I have meaning because I believe I have meaning. If I'm wrong, I still believe I have meaning regardless.

I love my family, my friends, my hobbies, etc. If those feelings are just biological reactions in my brain and have no higher purpose, so what? They are meaningful to me. Most, including theists, agree that dogs have no higher purpose and yet they obviously value life and emotional attachment. I don't see why we have to be any different.

That's what I believe, but then again even that is meaningless in a universe with no ultimate goal.

I believe all matter exists exists by a chance sequence of scientific principles that inherently exist apart from time and space, and I'm ok with that.

That's funny. Particularly the dog bit. For me, having no more "meaning" than a canine causes psychological and spiritual questions that are hard to reconcile.

For you: "Who gives a f#%@?"

I like it.

I wont lie and say I enjoy the idea of my death and cessation of consciousness, because I enjoy life. As Mark Twain once put it though, I was dead for billions of years prior to my birth and never suffered even the slightest inconvenience from it.
