The wait is finally over for Birmingham's Highlands Bar and Grill, which tonight won the prestigious James Beard Foundation Award as the most outstanding restaurant in America.

Highlands previously had been a finalist for the award for nine years in a row before winning in its 10th year.

Executive chef Frank Stitt and his wife and co-owner Pardis Stitt accepted the coveted James Beard medallion at 2018 awards ceremony at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

Highlands pastry chef Dolester Miles also won big earlier in the night, taking home the award for most outstanding pastry chef.

This year's other finalists for outstanding restaurant were Balthazar in New York City, Canlis in Seattle, Frasca Food and Wine in Boulder, Colo., and Quince in San Francisco.

Suck it New Orleans. Birmingham is the food city now

That's a bunch of bullshite.

So this place in Birmingham is supposed to be superior to, say, Prime in Las Vegas that serves A5 Kobe Beef and is located adjacent to the Bellagio fountain?

Oooookay.

Yes

Its been nominated 10 years in a row, the chef if globally renowned and has won plenty of big awards himself. This isn't something that's out of nowhere.

How much do you think a chef of that quality gets paid?

No idea. The chef there is also the owner Frank Stitt. He owns another successful award winning restaurant in Birmingham so I'm sure he rakes in cash.

And what's supposed to make it so special when many other restaurants clearly offer higher grade beef and a more elegant atmosphere?

What's not eloquent about this, friend?

Simplicity is eloquence.

And perhaps the beef is a slightly better quality elsewhere, but nowhere will you find fresher or better quality vegetables and produce or venison, and the seafood comes fresh from the gulf as well.

Birmingham has also been well-represented at the James Beard Awards in recent years.

Stitt was chosen the best chef in his region in 2001, and he was one of five finalists for the most outstanding chef in the country in 2008. Also, in 2011, he was inducted into the foundation's Who's Who of Food and Beverage in America, a group that includes Julia Child, Thomas Keller, Graham Kerr, Wolfgang Puck and Emeril Lagasse, among others.

In 2012, Chris Hastings of Birmingham's Hot and Hot Fish Club won a James Beard Award for best chef in the South, and in 2010, the Bright Star in Bessemer was named an "America's Classic" by the Beard Foundation.

beef

What is your obsession with beef, the least creative food? This isn't a steak house with great steaks and an otherwise uninspired and unoriginal menu. It's a unique restaurant with a world renowned chef blending classical French technique with southern elements.

Bellagio did once have an individual chef win a James Beard regional award. It was the chef at the Spanish influenced Picasso, which is regarded as one of the best restaurants in Vegas with two Michelin Stars.

But it definitely wasn't at a steak house that is literally just a Vegas styled piece of a celibrity chef's (he's a Beard winner in NY) chain of 25 other restaurants and concepts that his corporation oversees.

In fairness, only Louisiana people want to eat nasty crawfish.

Well, you lost me on vegetables.

I apologize for how I worded my original response, but no, I don’t see how this place ranks as the best restaurant in the country. But it’s close enough that I will give it a shot one day soon. Hell, I hope it is as good as they say.

In short, James Beard says shove your atmosphere deep up your a-hole. Its about the food and what you do with it.

Also, Rodney Scott, who has been one of the premier faces of SC BBQ for many years now, was named at the James Beard Awards as Best Chef in the Southeast.

Okay. Well, I will take an A5 Kobe over a NY Strip.

I don’t doubt that it is a great restaurant and I would enjoy eating there. However, I don’t expect it to be better than every restaurant I have been to. But I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

It's doubtful it will be the best restaurant you have ever eaten at. Not sure it is even the best one I've eaten at, and I'm a biased Birmingham resident. The award is probably partially some make up for it being nominated 10 years in a row before finally winning.

It is damn good, and worthy of the accolades it is getting.

I have been to quite a few upscale restaurants around the world that are both beautiful and serve very high grade beef.
