I'll take your word on the 13 model.

Yes they do, but to have 3 in such a short time frame is ridiculous. I usually really like Fords too, but the new model change leaves much to be desired. Prior to 2013, the Escapes were decent vehicles and none of my colleagues ever complained. These new ones, nobody likes.

Mom had a 2012 Explorer and it was in the shop so much that she traded it within half a year.

This^^^^^^. Stay away, far away. Not just because of the brand. I have had them as rentals several times, they are horrible.

Do. Not. Purchase.
So you have your heart set on a mid-sized SUV?
Might look at the Nissan Murano. It's a soccer mom car, an ex-gf had one and I actually liked it alot. Wasn't a boring design, interior was pretty good for a Nissan, and drove nice. Any V6 SUV you get will top out around 24mpg.
I hate car shopping, there's so many choices and buying used you'd better check em out with a fine tooth comb.

Any opinions on volvos?
As a small car, NO. I had one and the exterior is put together with legitimately duck tape and zips ties

2013 Escape actually has better gas mileage than previous models (2010 FWD 20/26 vs 2013 22/30) you can also note the 2013 has 68.1 cu ft of storage space behind first row and 34.3 cu ft space behind second vs 66.3 cu storage space behind first row of 2010 model and 29.2 cu ft storage space behind second row.
But hey exaggerate much?

Thanks guys. I'll be car shopping all weekend so I'll update with my decision once I've went through all the used car salesman bullshite.

Here are some tips:
- never accept first numbers
- never pay a "bump" sticker
- if new ask to see invoice and buy at invoice (start negotiations there)
- if used make sure it has warranty
- ask to see car fax/vehicle history if used
- compare new vs used in some cases with rebates you can get new for only a couple grand more than used
- with your car you can increase value if you can show your vehicle maintenance record (get this done if you go to same place for all oil changes/rotations/etc)
- check over final numbers a lot of dealerships try to throw extended warranty/gap into final numbers.
For every 10k vehicle you are looking at about 250 note at 60 months, 0 down so you can roughly figure out your note as well. I'm sure I'm leaving off a few things that you can do, but expect to get hassled not by salesman but finance/sales manager more so since they dictate negotiations more than salesman in many places.

Look, I worked for Enterprise Rent-A-Car for almost 7 years (laugh all you want, it's a great company), and have had 3 different company cars at my current job, so it's not like I haven't had experience with different vehicles. It may be a great car for a teenager or someone who wants decent gas mileage around the city, but it is not ideal for a sales rep who puts over 30k miles a year on a car.
Also, they use those numbers to say that there is more storage than previous models, but it just doesn't seem like it.

Visuals is all it is about, the vehicle as a whole is larger than the previous box shape and numbers for the 2013 is larger in storage, legroom, and width than previous models (lost some headroom though.) The 2013 also beats previous models in gas mileage but I wouldn't recommend it unless you got a ecoboost engine.
