Just wondering what (ostensibly) walked you back. I’m assuming anybody that answers didn’t follow through.

Once. The biggest thing was that I couldn't get it out of my head that I'm 800+ miles away from my parents/direct family. I did not want them to have to deal with getting my remains moved all the way back. That wasn't the only thing, but it seems to be the final thing that snapped me out of it.

Oh yes. I am sure most people have dealt with a really bad bout of depression before where the thought enters your mind.

Back in the day when my inner ear first went berserk on me I went through a stretch where I was sick every day, sometimes more then once, for a year and a half. It cost me my job, it ruined my academics since I was going to college at the time, and it just made me miserable.

Even after the intense vertigo passed I was at a very low point. I had just seen years of work get wasted. I had a hard time getting out of bed to go and buy groceries so I didn't starve. So I broke down and went to the free clinic on campus.

The nice counselor talked to me and then asked if I had felt suicidal. I said yes at times. She got very serious and asked... "Do you have a plan?" Because once you come up with a plan for suicide then its just a matter of enacting that plan. I didn't.

As for what got me out of that depression... I hate to admit I just borrowed a phrase from Winston Churchill and went with KBO. Keep Buggerin' On. I just kept putting one foot in front of the other.

If anyone reading this has thought about taking their own life then please get help. Its out there. Look for it. It will get better. You don't really want to die. You just want the pain to stop and it will. One day it will.

Though, in the short run, it might be best to not cheer for Arkansas in football if you are feeling suicidal. I'm just saying.

Don't know if I've ever really considered. There have been times where I think it'd be so much easier if I did. No more bs, just sleep. Typically what brings me back in these cases, I get angry that things are how they are and seek to improve things. That's about it

After coming home from a 15 month deployment to Iraq and finding out my wife had been sleeping around and was hooked on all kinds of drugs...I fell into a major depression. I've stayed up many nights with a loaded gun in my lap.

I honestly couldn't tell you what stopped me. I wouldn't say it's by the grace of god, I'm hardly a religious person. Can't say it was family, I've felt alienated by them most of my life, never really felt like I belonged.

After I left the military I started seeing a therapist and a psychiatrist, and have for the past 12 years. I still fight with PTSD and depression, but not like I use to.

It's startling how many more males commit suicide than females. I've read that females have much more emotional support than males.

quote:

In 2016, there were 44,965 recorded suicides, up from 42,773 in 2014, according to the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). On average, adjusted for age, the annual U.S. suicide rate increased 24% between 1999 and 2014, from 10.5 to 13.0 suicides per 100,000 people, the highest rate recorded in 28 years.

In my worst depression I had thoughts that this world would be better off without me in it, but I never got to a point where I planned out orchestrating my own exit from it.

My wife's mom committed suicide. It's a terribly selfish thing to do imo.

Suicidal thoughts aren't uncommon. Many people feel outcast, lonely, depressed, and overwhelmed with stress from time to time.

No, the people you know won't be better off if you were gone. They'd be deeply saddened.

There's always someone to talk to, and sometimes thats all we need, someone to listen. These folks are great: 1-800-273-8255.

Sometimes all we need is a friend. So, if you're feeling low and need a friend, you have one in me. :)

Yes. When I was in grad school and all my projects were not working. I had thoughts to do it one night while my wife was doing an overnight shift.

The thing that stopped me was thinking about my son waking up the next morning, crying in his crib, and being scared because his dad wasn’t coming to get him. I knew I couldn’t do it then.

I left grad school soon after and life has been much better for me.

I'm middle aged and I haven't yet either.

I almost kinda feel weird saying that, I have about a 48-72 hour thing where I'll get down once or maybe twice a year it seems like. Then I get sick of my own pity party and basically tell/will myself to get over it and move on.

By no means, would I tell someone else that or think that's something that would work for others or belittle other folks problems- just saying how my mind deals with itself in blue times.

I realized that suicide is the ultimate selfish act. I would have removed all the pain only to cause a great deal of it to those left behind. You alright bro? If not, give it to God brother. He understands you. He robed himself in flesh and walked as man. Call him up....

I've never considered doing it or even thought about how I would do it, but I have thought about what the aftermath would be like if I were to ever do it. It's dark thoughts man, even at that level.

I took a ton of sleeping pills, started hallucinating and went to my mom's house. She had no idea, and I just said that I was going to go to sleep without knowing if I was going to wake up again or not.

Twice seriously. Multiple times a day in passing thought.

The only reason I didn't/don't is knowing I'd hurt those left behind.
