I actually just started the process of learning woodworking professionally. I'm miserable at my current office computer job, I'm much happier working with my hands. I'm also heavily considering a move to Maine next spring for a prestigious woodworking school there, should I get accepted.
I saved that thread of yours, thats perfect advice and motivation right now. It looks like you were in a similar place then as I am now and its very encouraging to know that you succeeded and are happier for it.
Well... we know you are creative. You troll at the gifted level so you've got something going on.
In all honesty, while I loved my time at Arkansas, I could do what I am doing now without a college degree. And I make a decent living doing it.
Get your ducks in a row and go for it. What is the worst that happens? It doesn't work out? Then you can go back to your office computer job with a different company.
Hell, I'll sweeten the deal. Give me six months to finish paying off my parent's bills (they were horrible with money and got scammed by time share assholes) and I'll order something from you.

How can I get in on this?
I found a local woodworkers guild. $100 annual membership fee and I have access to their workshop as well as monthly classes. I already have a small feel for woodworking because my grandfather was one and when we would visit as a kid he would always have projects for us to do in the workshop. Its been,a long time though so I'm still starting with very beginner basic classes. Best case scenario would be to make connections through the guild that lead to an apprenticeship. Assuming no apprenticeship then the application process for the woodworking school in Maine I mentioned will be back open and by that point I should be at a level to where I can apply and reasonably expect to be accepted.
If your area doesn't have a woodworkers guild like the one here then some community colleges and trade schools offer classes, there just wasn't anything like that in the Birmingham area for me. I'm glad though because I think this is probably a better route than enrolling in a community college or something right away.

Idk if in 6 months I'll be good enough that you'd want to buy anything, but I appreciate the offer

I think there's a good market for quality handmade wooden furniture, so furniture will probably be my main product once I eventually get to that point.

I work in IT and love the field but after 18 years I'm bored sometimes. I think I would have been this way in any profession after almost 2 decades.

Well, since I have relatives in the furniture business, and they have made a few million doing it, yes... there is a market for handmade wooden furniture.
I say go for it.

I just got started in IT and the job, company, and more specifically my coworkers, are awesome. One kid is a douche that cant appreciate dark humor but nobody likes him anyway.

Yep. I've lost both my parents so no longer have a familial connection to keep me where I am. But I have a wife and 2 kids, and the wife's parents are advancing in age and starting to have some health problems. No way I could convince her to pick up and move out of state, which is what I want to do. Move to the NC mountains and live a simpler life. Open my own shop of some kind, be my own boss, stop the Sunday afternoon anxiety over the coming work week, etc. Pulling my kids away from their friends and the only life they've known holds me back as well.
Oh well.
Oh well.

I'm in IT work now, have been my whole career, and it's got it's challenges for sure. I get tired of it. Be glad to get out when I retire.
I do like surfing though.

I'm hoping this doesn't get old. I'm hoping we give IDM to infrastructure so me and the other guy can focus on the new SIEM we're researching.

I am 4 years from "slowing down". Semi-retirement is on the books. Have been working up to it for 10 years now. If nothing happens bad, It looks like it is going to work out for us.
Will switch to a 2/3 day work week. Looking forward to that....

When I retire I plan on having something similar; fish 3 or 4 days, do shite around the house for 2 half days and then scratch my arse the rest of the time

arse scratching is an under rated past time I say. When I start to scale things back, I don't think I'll ever truly retire, picking up something like fishing sounds very appealing.

ADVICE FOR YOUNG FOLKS JUST STARTING OUT
Above all, find something you LIKE to do! It may not seem to have the best future earning capability as something else, but most people who LIKE what they do are eventually GOOD at it, and if you're GOOD at something, you can most often command a big price for your service (plus the chance of you starting your own business in that field is much better, and that's where the REAL money lies).
Finally, believe it or not, when your working life is over, you'll look back on it all with a great sense of satisfaction and inner-peace, because you did what you WANTED to do and you did it well.
This is experience talking to you....it's your choice to make.
