Love scotch but my palate isn't as discriminating as everyone else's I guess. I just do blends with a splash of water. Dewar's or Cutty is fine. Drinking it neat is a bit harsh for my taste.

we all gotta start somewhere. I didnt even like scotch till I got into Mezcal. Which in turn made me get into scotches from Islay.

Maybe I will give single malts a whirl. I think I will try a Glenlivet or Glenmorangie.

Macallan 12 is my "standard" but also keep Oban, Dalwhinnie, and Talisker around as well as Lagavulin.

Lagavulin 16 is my favorite right now

My everyday scotch is Dewars White Label.
It’s better than many 12 year olds.
After that I prefer single malts.
Don’t frown on a splash of water (two drops) or an ice cube.
It “opens up” the flavors in the single malts.

two drops yes, a cube can water it down a little too much for me
youre right about the 2 drop method. It really opens up certain scotches. There really is a science to it

Have several.
Ardbeg is on top by a good bit overall. I'm a lover of the peaty potions. My not as solid second is Glenmorangie.
After that it's all neck and neck. My last bottle of Laphroaig seemed a tad thin in the development and finish. The Peat Monster is a tremendous batch blend of three peated single malts as is Monkey Shoulder only it's an batch blend of three unpeated single malts. Both are extremely good whisky period. Monkey Shoulder is quite a value at sub $40. Peat Monster not so inexpensive in the mid $60s.
I just flat out like the Balvenie period. Just not so much as my peats. It's really a toss up between it and Glenmorangie.

How is that Peat Monster and Monkey Shoulder?

I thought Glenmorangie was not peaty? I prefer the refreshing lack of peat.

quote:I like them both a great deal. MS is very smooth and light, a tad clover and slightly sweet. The PM is just that. Peaty. Hits you and stays but doesn't overwhelm you like Laphroaig sometimes did. First time drinking Laphroaig it took my breath away. MS is very economical. PM less so.

It isn't. It's just second on my go to list. I didn't make that too clear. I make sure if we're getting together for a few drams of each other's favorites that we save the peaty stuff last

I really tried to like scotch, but found that my favorites were the Mac Fine Oak offerings. I finally decided that the reason I liked them the best is because they were closest to bourbon so I gave up and just drink American whiskeys.
