Maybe we can dig a hole and bore our way in.

I was thinking that they could sling a flash bang down in the pvc pipe, blow the locks off of the entrance, then grab the kid. But he likely has a the pipe blocked off from that sort of thing.

Those who live near the man holding a young child hostage say they feared Jimmy Lee Dykes. They talk about what they consider the "strange" things he did including beating a dog.

Update
Dale County - Law Enforcement is still on the scene going on into day 3. Negotiations are still going on, but so far no change. The brave young man is reported to be doing fine. The suspect is giving him his medications and appears to be taking good care of the boy.
Law enforcement would like to thank everyone who has volunteered and donated food and water while this going on. Most of the law enforcement has been on scene since this all unfolded and has not left.
Sheriff Olson ask that everyone still remain vigilant and keep praying for the young boy and that this can be resolved as quickly as possible is the safest manner for both the boy and law enforcement.
Candlelight vigils have been held and will continue to be held until all is resolved. We don’t have a list of locations or times for any of theses.
We will try to keep everyone up dated on the situation as information comes available.

I was thinking some kind of sleeping gas until I saw this on wiki: "Most sleeping gases have undesirable side effects, or are effective at doses that approach toxicity."

If the man has gone 3 days without sleep this should be ending soon.

True. It doesnt seem like he has any plans of hurting the kid. Hope so at least.

Can't they just give in to this guys demands {if he has any} for the childs sake. Make the guy think he will get asylum to another country then nab him.

You can go about a week before things start to affect you. After two weeks then you're dead.

UPDATE: 12:50 PM
MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (AP) -- Negotiators have been talking through a 4-inch-wide ventilation pipe to a man holding a 5-year-old boy hostage in an underground shelter in rural Alabama.
The standoff entered its second full day Thursday after authorities said a gunman pulled the boy off a school bus and killed the driver Tuesday.
The police chief of the adjacent town of Pinckard, James Arrington, says that the two are in a bunker that's about 4 feet underground and has about 6-by-8 feet of floor space.
He says the man identified by neighbors as Jimmy Lee Dykes has been sleeping some.
The chief also says the man holds strong anti-government views and the FBI has reason to believe the shooting of the driver was a hate crime.

I couldnt really tell from the photo that was posted but the bus driver looked white. Guess i was wrong.

The driver could have been white, and it still could have been a hate crime.
And what demands could the guy have that would hurt the child?
I hope they find a way to save the little boy, get this sicko out of his hidey-hole and introduce him to the business end of one of his weapons.

I guess, but usually when you hear "hate crime", you know the story.

It's not like they can wait til he goes to sleep then rush in there.I'm sure he has the door locked and would have time to kill the kid and himself before they got in.
