Error. BB King donated his entire record collection, and Morgan Freeman is a huge contributor, so I guess we have at least 2. You do understand that southern culture has more roots than one?

It really was impressive walking around by the frats. They were also smart enough to block the view of their parties so no one saw them kissing relatives

Yet you tout bama wins like you were on the field.

...and your childish jealousy at Alabama's success would make one think that you played for the losing team.

So who pays for these houses? The greeks? Or the rest of the taxpayers and student body?

I think I'm about to be pissed if it is the latter.

Roll your eyes if you want--but building palaces for the most privileged kids in the state, using independent/taxpayer money?

What a country.

The whole campus is getting rebuilt. No one is getting left out. Hell they are building a second rec center for just freshmen.

The whole campus is getting rebuilt for the benefit of the entire student body.

200 million is being poured into plantation mansions for just the greeks.

One of these things does not equal the other. I always assumed they paid their own freight. But I guess these young and upcoming small-government conservatives will suck the government teet for another four years.

The university pays a small percentage to be able to have control over these houses. They make sure no basements are built and the houses have camera's all over the place.

God you sound ridiculous.

I thought the University just gave them virtually interest free loans for part of the construction and the Greek organizations paid the rest. I know the University owns the land and leases it to them for like $1 per year.

I wouldn't have a problem with that. No one specified how much UA/other students/taxpayers kicked in.

It should be virtually entirely privately funded.

You're the one who is defensive when I suggest these rugged individualists pay their own way, without subsidy.

This is 'Merica.

I'm a taxpayer, and as a taxpayer I don't think any public money should go to build palaces that favor one group over another.

As someone currently paying the 5k in freight, I don't think any of that money should go to said palaces, either.

But another poster indicated that very little money goes to the greeks--and maybe they put more back in than they take out.

So instead of starting with the insults, maybe you could provide more information.

And to be fair, argument can be made that the poor (who pay taxes, but can't afford to go) subsidize every student there--but I went there, so I guess I'm a mooch too.
