We're too busy building multi million dollar medical research and hospital expansions of our med school on UAB's campus. Not to mention all the student housing being built on the UAB campus. The UA BOT has been a hell of a lot better to UAB than they are given credit for.

Both by neighbors and ourselves.

Had some good times at the old house.

Oh, wow.
Someone may have "graduated" from college, yet doesn't even grasp the concept of what a college system is.

Figured Id chime in here. Expansion isn't even close to being done, both for fraternities and sororities. The houses on the table the articles talking about, for fraternities at least, are the new Pi Kapp and Theta Chi houses that'll be done next fall. Delta Chi renovated their house and doubled its size. KA is going to tear down their house, move to Sig Eps old house for a year, and build a huge new house on their old lot and the half lot next door thats currently a drainage area. Phi Psi has to move somewhere when they expand the walk of champions and will probably go to the old sigma chi house and renovate that PoS. Plus 3 new fraternities coming next fall, 2 of which will get the old theta chi and pi kapp houses. Lots of money pouring in these next 5 years. current greek student FWIW

LSU is in dire need to upgrading all of the fraternity houses. The sorority houses on campus can compete with anyone, but our fraternity houses are meh at best

The comment about Alabama's med school was a bit tongue in cheek. I realize the medical school is now under the UAB logo but before that for many years it was the University of Alabama School of Medicine. It just seems that once it became UAB every "UAT" hater goes out of their way to act like Alabama has absolutely nothing to do with the medical school.

I read somewhere that the University provided financing on some of these new houses, or at least some of the sorority houses. Is that normal down there?

That money most assuredly could NOT be used in a better way

I guess it is now. I know they have helped fund all of the new fraternity houses for sure.

I don't know if it's normal but if the school is providing funding then I'd imagine all the houses would be technically owned by the University and the school can have more control over the Greek system.

It IS going to something useful. People will have jobs and provide for the family with the money they make from the job.

You missed the point. Spend every cent building something useful then.

And yes they can spend money on whatever they want but a dumb decision is a dumb decision.

This goes for all schools.

Yep. No basements are being built and camera's are being put all over the houses.

Possibly, but I would have to fact check on that since the houses are already a part of campus.

The sorority houses at UA are insane. Absolutely unlike anything at Auburn. It's impressive for sure.

They have control. Phi Gam has the ability that if kicked off campus they can just take their letters down, but keep the house because they own it.

The university can kick these other fraternities out of their houses if needed and give them to another fraternity if they wanted to.

I'll admit that while the New fraternities/sororities are impressive I don't really understand the building boom in this area compared to traditional dorms. On the other hand, the University has been building several really nice and large New dorms the last few years. I guess the school wanted to follow suit with the Greek houses. I also think there is something to the fact that at a lot of schools (especially large state schools) the Greek systems produce the most generous future alum donors to the school.

That's what I was thinking. They built some pseudo Frat Row at SDSU. Really limited the things that those houses could do.

Then again, SDSU ain't Bama.

The University loans the money to the House Corp of each Frat or Sorority. They pay a mortgage.
And the $202 million is the figure for the new construction, not the value of all houses.
