Especially the last one, think about it for a second. Ted Cruz was so hated in the Senate that they're confident they could have murdered one of their colleagues on the floor Julius Caesar style, and he's sure that no one would have a problem with it. Do you have anyone you work with where that may actually be somewhat feasible that no one would have a problem with them being killed?

Do you really think it is a good idea to run someone against Hillary Clinton who is even more hated (much more in fact) than Hillary Clinton? They would have had a field day with Cruz's loathsomeness, and it would have bar none been the lowest turnout to the polls in American history. Ted Cruz would lose to Hillary. At least Trump has an enticing niche he fills.
