His defense was no 3 in total D last year so...
I mean, come on folks. Pay a little bit of attention to the game as a whole. The SEC is turning into the Big 12

Yay...more stats ignoring context. If you want to take into account quality of offenses faced, you need to dive deeper than things like "total defense" and scoring defense.
Fact is we dont play many quality offenses here in the SEC east (+ arky every year) and when we do Rex Walters pisses down his leg every time.
If you feel like you must use that stat to defend walters how about posting his total D performances against offenses that finish top 30 or so.

Or 6th in the SEC
Not great, but not “arse”
Middle of the road. All of the schools in front of us have way more “talent” and several behind us also

and we need to be "good" at a minimum to compete.

Agreed, let’s hope the reinforcements on the DL make a difference for us

Let's be honest tho. Haley hasn't developed the DL.

Walters had too many youngsters starting because of injuries . For godsakes, Robinson is playing safety.
The big problem over the past few years is lack of turnovers. They got a couple today, but it doesn’t seem to be a priority. Great INT but those have been rare and we didnt cause the fumble.

What a shitty field.

Its not just this game. The true measure of Walters, is he can't scheme to at least slow down inexperienced QBs. He doesn't have creative looks that at least make a freshman qb slightly confused.

Walters is vanilla as shite. Defense won’t ever be great with him.

Walters, like Odon, like Pinkel, can't adjust. Bring in a Back up QB, with a different skill set, and oh crap! Play an air raid offense that decides to run the ball, well . . .
They also seem lost when a QB evades the 1st rush and decides to scramble. More talent is needed, but the tactics need work. I see a lot of planning for tendencies, rather than capabilities.

It's not going to happen.
It'll be chalked up to a COVID season with unprecedented player attrition and that's probably fair. Plus Drink's not going to risk his recruiting momentum by firing one of the principals in attracting the class.
Now if the defense is a shitshow again next year all bets are off. I caught Eli's post-game presser and he was a little terse when asked about the defense, so my takeaway is Walters is going to be on notice next year and that's fair.
In today's game it's almost hard to know what fair is. Alabama's defense gave up 46 and Flordia's gave up 52. What's the benchmark for solid game defensively? In the 20s or less? Damned if I know.
All I know is I'm excited about next year and this influx of new talent. Drink's assembled a great staff of recruiters and is exhausting all avenues for talent acquistion to turn this roster over.
2021 can't get here soon enough. Let's start it off by winning a bowl game.

Here is my case for firing him...
1. St. Louis is filthy loaded with recruits. Mizzou jumps to a new level with those recruits.
2. Mizzou does not have the big play guys to depend on high scoring shootouts in 2021. Defense has to contribute, even if they only take a bend but don't break approach.
3. Mason is available. Black coaches in St. Louis still harbor negativity toward Mizzou. Masons character overcomes that shite. Or at least gives us the very best chance. Also when Mason is in a living room talking academics and commitment to character, who is going to doubt him?
4. Several of our new recruits are big, long dbs. We need a new approach. We can't waste this talent.
5. This isn't about shitting on Walters. All the top SEC programs go after coaches that take them to the next level. We got the HC it would be perfectly normal to replace the DC if someone else gives us a strategic advantage.

How is a DC who's defense has been shredded the last 3 games, end up as one of your "principles in attracting the class"
It would be different if he has a record of success.. Walters does not.
It's going to take more than hiding behind covid IMO
Drink had some serious recruiting momentum the last couple of weeks.. Let's see if it continues.
Looking forward to 2021 and beyond.

Walters just helped recruit four DBs who signed last week (no doubt on a platform of family, loyalty, etc.) and also helped on Isaac Thompson for the 2022 class. What would it say to Thompson and the rest if you fired the man who's been selling them that vision after one year? And yeah, in a year with COVID. It's not cover, it's the truth.
I don't know if the job is too big for Walters or not - and you're right, so far the results have been VERY underwhelming. All I'm saying is Drink would have to have balls the size of grapefruit to whack him after the team exceeded all expectations for 2020 and I don't think he will for the reasons I outlined.
