Just wondering what the thinking is there in KC about trying to land an NHL expansion franchise since the NHL announced its opening up the process for expansion of the NHL.

Anywhere north of the Dixie line that isn't Las Vegas is fine by me.

Seattle, KC, and Quebec are the 3 most viable.

Quebec and KC both have new arena's in place built with the specific intention of landing an NHL team.

I think it would be more well received now than a few years back. We have a popular ECHL team now. They have been building junior hockey leagues also for the past few years and it's gaining in popularity around here. The Mavericks are a good affordable way to see semi pro hockey. They are just about 15 minutes from my house.

Sprint center needs an anchor tenant. It's either going to be NBA or NHL. NHL looks more viable at this point.

If the price is 500,000,000 as reports have said, frick no. Nobody here cares about hockey so it's not worth that investment. It doesn't make sense for the city financially

Easy soccer boy.

The Mo Mavericks in KC have the highest attendance in the CHL.

There's interest in an NHL team, they wouldn't have built the Sprint Center if they didn't see the market.

Besides -- you KCer's are super bandwagon.

If you had a winning chess team you'd be all over that.

New money eats it all up, and you'all are that new money.

You don't know what the frick you are talking about Bi Polar Boy.

Kilo, there is a small interest in NHL. The preference would be the NBA, and it isn't even close.

Back in 2005 KC tried to lure the Penguins with the new Sprint Center.I'd rather see a NHL team over NBA.Don't think NBA is looking to expand though.

I'd love to see the Nordiques back in Quebec.

I think at one time yes, NBA was probably out front. But hockey has probably taken that spot over. I think hockey is trending up. I personally would rather have an NHL team than an NBA team here. Hockey is a much more entertaining sport than basketball. JMO.

As far as the two hockey franchises that was pursued before. The Penguins used KC as a pawn to get Pittsburgh to build them a new arena. Mario never had any plans to move them to KC. Pittsburgh is a huge hockey town.

The Predators on the other hand had an attendance problem that was finally taken care of thanks to a local business owner. We were very close to getting the Preditors here.

I agree with this.I was watching the NHL playoffs over NBA playoffs all spring.I only bothered tuning into NBA playoffs if nothing else was on.My friend and I would definitely go to a NHL game at Sprint Center.Doubt either of us would even care about NBA.

I'm not advocating either one, because I'm not a fan of either of the pro leagues. There is more interest in the NBA though than the NHL. Of course, that could change if an NHL franchise was lured here.

St Louis had hardly any youth hockey participation when the Blues started in St Louis. In just two generations, with the help pf the Blues and its alumni organization the St Louis area is producing NHL, Major Junior and college hockey players.

Im not saying this will happen for sure in KC but I think KC is a good sports town and both cities mirror each other in that respect.

I would love to see KC get a hockey team and St Louis get an MLS team. Would be great for the fans from both cities having a sporting rivalry outside of two baseball series a year.

This. I'm not saying people couldn't learn to like hockey here, but it sure as hell isn't worth 500 million to this city.

In St. Louis, things like hockey, field hockey, lacrosse, and other east-coast sports are common and popular. Those sports hardly exist in KC so I have my doubts about bringing a hockey team here. I'd rather the NBA, and I know that most Kansas Citians feel the same.

Case in point, the NHL lasted 2 seasons in Kansas City. The NBA only lasted 10, but still. An NHL franchise that only survives 2 seasons in a city before moving is not a good sign.

Don't want to give the wrong idea though...I would be beyond ecstatic if we got an NHL franchise. I just don't think it's worth the 500 million dollar investment for the city.

Wouldn't the new owner pay the bill for a team?

Yeah I hated to see the Kings leave. Attendance was down mainly because they played in a dump (Kemper Arena even back then) in the worse place imaginable, the West Bottoms.

Yeah they would, I guess I misunderstood the original article I read. That being said, I don't think we have anyone with those kind of pockets willing to bring a team here. Here is a good article about the Seattle situation which applies to KC too. We didn't have anyone willing to pry the Royals away from David Glass 10 years ago...I doubt we have anyone to pay 500 million for an NHL team that may or may not catch hold in Kansas City. A 500 million investment for a highly risky likelihood of return is a big issue.

I think KC is a lot like St Louis was prior to the Blues first season. I can see hockey taking root there the same way it did in St Louis. Good sports fans are good sports fans. KC has good sports fans. An owner with the right chops could come in there and with a well run organization do very well IMO. All you have to do is run the franchise correctly. A great building to play in is already there and built. I wish I had a cool 500 mil laying around...

There is a great venue in KC without an anchor tenant. I just dont see anything opening up on the NBA side. I think it would be a great marriage between the NHL and KC.

I may be wrong and you KC people know more than me obviously.

Clearly your panties are rustled with the odd east coast comment.

It's pretty evident you don't know St. Louis. But that's okay.

A bit of relevance, hockey wasn't a thing here until the Blues showed up. Kilo already said that, obviously you're not real interested in an honest discussion.

Things have changed for the NHL and KC. The game is more appealing now, and KC has a little more going for them.

KC leads CHL in attendance, there's clearly more interest than you're aware of.

There's an argument to be made about the level of play in the NHL trending up compared to a stagnant or downward trending NBA, but I don't feel like making it.

That all aside, I wouldn't be a proponent of KC getting a hockey team if I was KC or the NHL. The Sprint Center doesn't need an anchor tenant, they can do fine with selling prime dates for other events and keeping more of the share for themselves and the NHL can do better.

I watched 5 buses of Mavericks fans pull up to the Family Arena for their game/games against the Chill and laughed at how awesome that was for a CHL team.

I think its a great argument. The IIHF is in the process of developing a hockey "world cup" that mirrors the FIFA world cup because the interest and participation world wide is going through the roof. Basketball is seen as a niche sport in Europe. Its thoroughly american. Times are changing.

No way. I work in the "industry" and a well drawn anchor tenant is far more desirable than trying to book 1/2 and 1/3 house acts. I dont even get this argument unless its politicians trying to justify things.

Either way. KC is ripe for an NHL franchise buddy. Ill split it with you. Just let me know when you come up with your 250 million.
