Mike Alden Exit Interview

From Dave Matter's Twitter.
Talked about the move to the SEC being being stressful, because they were nervous about where they might end up.
Also commented on Dodds statement regarding Texas' bad years still being better than our good years.
Some interesting comments.
I know some here scoff at his accomplishments, but, he did some good things, and the AD is in a much better position than it was when he arrived. As an older fan, I recall the old days. Things are much better now, even with basketball being what it was last year.
I'll give him 3 1/2 out of 5 stars considering what he accomplished. I'll bump it up a notch if KA turns out to be the right hire.

Interesting stuff.
I thought the part about his exit making better relations with Big 12 possible really interesting.

I used to think one of his biggest problems was his feminine nature. The contradiction of his lack of dominant characteristics while being charged with leading an athletic department.
While I hold steady to that opinion, it came to my attention during the replacement search that the AD profession is littered with these kind of guys.
I agree, Alden did a lot of good. I've reflected on this and felt bad for how much I've disliked the guy over the last few years.

Yeah, sounds like he may have pissed off a few people when we left.
I'm ok with that. If his legacy is the guy that got tired of ol' Mizzou being the whippin' boy, then build him a fricking statue. It was well overdue, and I'm forever grateful that he got what the rest of us were tired of.
ETA: Magma, are you posting on STLToday now?

Saw your post earlier. Laughed.
Shameful yes. Not much, though.

Finally we know why he says Muhzeruh. His grandma from Higginsville pronounced it that way. I can rest easy now.

Let's make it a summer of owning those bitches.
That's probably the worst board I've ever seen.

I may have to watch the carnage. let me know where to look though.

You are way to kind. Alden was horrible as an AD. He should have been gone years ago. I am glad he didn't have the chance to be the guy that looked for Pinkel's replacement.

I agree.
I'm glad he's not picking GP's replacement.
So are all of us here. However, he did fine, and left at the right time.
I hope we look back on his tenure as the tenure that changed Mizzou.

I agree with both of these statements.
However, my biggest knock on him is that his program only won 5 team conference championships across 18 sports over 18 years. That's 324 opportunities to win our conference in something (18 teams x 18 seasons) and we only did it 5 times. (2 times in softball, 1 time in women's soccer, 1 time in volleyball, 1 time in wrestling). If you're wondering why I list wrestling as just 1 it is because 2015 is the only time we've won the regular season in wrestling. 2012, 2013, and 2014 were all tournament titles, which I treat like basketball tournament titles....not a real conference championship.
Anyways, I think at some point I'll look back and truly appreciate what Alden did for Mizzou athletics, because I know he did a lot.

Yeah he seemed to mention that a couple of different times. I guess he knows he pissed off some people and burned some bridges that only a new person would be able to fix.
I think MA did well overall. Just wish he could have figured out basketball. I agree with the comment that he is leaving at the right time. He should not be allowed to hire the next football or basketball coach.

I enjoyed the little shot at Dodds and texas. "I assume the longhorns have done well, I don't know, I don't pay attention to them." Paraphrased, of course.

Basketball is in a much worse place than it was when he got here, but other than that I'm not sure you can say what isn't better now than it was 18 years ago. Facilities are light years ahead of where they were, almost without exception better coaches are in place, and you have three programs that are legitimately knocking on the door of national championships (football, wrestling and softball) each year.
Football drives the bus, and is better than ever, and although I didn't want Mizzou to go to the SEC I think it's basically been an unqualified success. Not sure how you can say he was horrible.

Not only are most all sports other than basketball in a better place now than when he took over, but the other sports haven't even really started to feel the impact of football being in such a great position and all the $$$ that will be rolling in. Some minor improvements, but once the money really starts rolling in and we can make significant improvements along they way (like the softball stadium), I imagine all of the other sports are going to do nothing but get better.

I don't think basketball was in a much worse place for the majority of his time as AD. It is at this particular moment but without diverting the conversation on that exactly, the numbers don't bear out that the 4 coaches since Norm have been statistically worse than he was.
For sake of comparison lets take Norm's last 16 years, which arguably include some of his best teams and compare them to the 16 since.
Games Won per Year:
Norm 20.8
Others 20.4
Percent (since there are more games now):
Norm 65.0%
Others 61.5%
NCAA tourney appearances
Norm 10 (1 S16, 1 E8)
Others 9 (0 S16, 2 E8)
Norm's last 5 years he won 18.2 games a year (58.3%) and made the tourney 2 times.
The last 5 seasons right now (1 KA, 3 FH, 1MA) the team has won 21.8 games a year (63.8%) and made the tourney 3 times.
Norm was very up and down throughout his tenure and people tend to focus only on his good years.

It would be fun dropping mind bombs on those idiots, but man, don't think I need to add to my internet addiction. I'm trying hard to stay away. I feel dirty after posting there.
If I make that a habit I'll put out the bat signal.
And yeah, worst forum I've ever seen. The website is obviously brutal, and the posters are even worse. Multiple Scroosters, mixed with a bunch of sabermetric nonhumans that have fully latched onto an ideology because it's the one 'intelligent', 'scientificky' thing they can sort of understand.
