The current state of Missouri football reminds me in many ways of the 1999 LSU football team. Gerry Dinardo was the head coach who vowed to 'bring back the magic' and he did. 1995-96-97 were winning years including an upset of # 1 Florida. Prior to his hiring LSU had experienced six straight losing seasons. Please understand prior to that stretch LSU had never had back-to-back losing seasons in its history! In 1998 a very talented LSU team had a losing season. Everyone was apprehensive about the 1999 season. Gerry Dinardo brought in a new Offensive Coordinator and LSU was under tremendous pressure to improve. LSU failed miserably and the team quit on Dinardo. The wheels fell off and Dinardo was fired. The last game of that memorable season was against the 8-3 Arkansas Razorbacks in Baton Rouge. With no Head Coach and with no turnovers LSU buried Cotton Bowl bound Arkansas 35-10. LSU had a very talented team and it showed itself that day. People openly wondered what the team could do with a good coach.

The similarities with Missouri are this. Pinkel is under enormous pressure to win this year and post a winning season. It is critical for practice (post season) and recruiting. He has replaced his offensive coordinator, who although is well respected has no prior experience as an offensive coordinator.
Like LSU that year, Missouri is a talented team. Make no mistake here, accolades prior to last year were no fluke.
Lack of depth and inept QB play were the main reasons Missouri had a losing season last year. A lot depends on how well the offense performs this year. So goes the offense, so goes Missouri. As many people rightly pointed out, the defense was left on the field too long.
If Pinkel drives the team too hard or the team performs poorly, the team might pack it in. Many of you suggested that is what happened last year. This type of situation has happened to other coaches and Missouri is not immune to this.

LSU fired Gerry Dinardo for that losing season. The coach LSU hired to replace him? Nick Saban.

If in fact Missouri has a losing season, will it in fact be the catalyst for a new coach? Or another year to get it together?

Oz, that's a question for Mike Alden, our AD. If the scuttle is to be believed, there were some big-money supporters who wanted him gone after last year. Despite what was said publicly, no one really believed Dave Yost left of his own accord, or that Pinkel was anything other than pissed about it. Alden allowed Pinkel to promote from within for OC. That's what Pinkel prefers to do, and so we got another first-time OC. It's admirable that Pinkel is loyal to his staff, and believes in them, but his insistence on that approach in this case will either end up saving him or being his downfall.

By allowing him that choice, instead of a proven OC that would bring fresh blood into the program, Alden both supported him and gave him the rope to hang himself. And it's definitely in question - Pinkel's existing contract is only through 2017, he doesn't have the window coaches are normally given. If the offense starts clicking again, and we end up with a winning record, he'll likely be given another year. If the offense is anemic again, with all the weapons we have, and we have another losing record? I think he's gone. The kicker will be if the offense does well, but we still have a 6-6 or worse record - I think he'll still probably "retire" at that point.

Unfortunately, the combination of his off-field issues last year and the team's poor performance cost him a lot of good will from the people who matter. If the word on the street is to be believed. I think his leash is much shorter than it was 2 years ago.

Ozland Thanks for being a part of our board. I just have one question when it comes to HCGP. Has the SEC heard "What we do works we just have to do it better" ?????????

That is what we have in our coaching staff. All of our class can be no star recruits as long as they do what we do and do it better we will be fine!!!

Once Pinkel is gone, I truly hope I NEVER hear that phrase again.

Yes, we have heard the phrase. No offense to all of the 2* players who have been coached up by Missouri, but it has been my experience they get run over by 5* recruits on their way to scoring a touchdown.

Hit the nail on the head with that one!

Give us your honest opinion of Johnny Football after this off-season he has had?

Sorry, just now seeing this, my bad.

I knew who he was before the '12 season--he was in the business school for awhile. He's ALWAYS been exactly the way he's represented himself this past offseason. Only difference is now the world is interested in his comings and goings and he invites the attention. He's a jackass and a hellion, and I thought that before he took the reins as QB.

But he's a damn good QB, obviously. I'd rather we had someone with, say Jerrod Johnson's character and JFF's talent, but if I have to chose one or the other to head up my team, it'd be Manziel.

So my opinion of him hasn't really changed based on the offseason, I guess. That's who he is, take it or leave it.

If you wrote this on PowerMizzou, all hell would break loose.

Maybe I will borrow this later......

I'm hearing Pinkel is done after this year unless something drastic happens. Call it "retirement" or whatever, but Alden wants to open the expansion to a lot of fanfare and excitement around the football program.

Makes sense to me. I can't reveal origin of this info or give you an idea of its quality, but I do know that Semo is right about the boosters. A lot of the BIG money folks were done with Pinkel last year. I think there were a few that were still unsure. Pinkel might have talked Alden into giving him a chance to go out as a winner and set up a better timing for change with the renovations.

It will be interesting to see what actually happens.

Mizzou added a new coach, Kendall Bradley, from Baker University(???) as the offensive quality control coach. Based on the comments from the head coach at Baker, Bradley should fit right in at Mizzou, assuming he carries the head coaches thinking to Mizzou. The quote from the head coach:

quote:

This is why we do what we do...

I have heard from two separate people that claim connections to the AD that confirm that this will be Pinkel's last season. We will see if it is true.

If this is the case, I'd bet someone has talked to Jimmy Sexton.

Seriously, this wouldn't surprise me a bit. And if he announces his retirement, that would be the best case scenario for everyone. Publicly, it's nice and clean - even if it's more acrimonious behind closed doors. And Alden likes to keep things as clean as possible.

So, I guess we should get ready for all the "who should we hire" threads? Assuming this plays out as expected, of course.

What I need to know about HCGP is whether he is still connected to the gal he left his wife for. If yes, we may have stability and focus. If no, he is likely distracted. I would also like to know how much coach is drinking. I'm no prude, but I know too much too often makes anyone less than sharp.

I realize we had injury problems at line, rb and qb last season. But we also had a very distracted head coach. I have to think we could have scraped together a couple more wins if he had been completely focused.

AA, I don't know about the girl. Or how much he's drinking now. Last season, though, a booster told me Pinkel was out at the bars "several nights a week" and that considering how the team was doing he needed to be paying a little more attention instead of being a barfly. No idea if that's changed, but I'd way you were right in your assumption that we may have won a few more games with a focused coach.
