My little brother made the a&m team as a walk on his freshman year and LOST academic scholarships due to NCAA rules. He's still in the hole in debt to a&m because of that even though he's no longer on the team. And I know firsthand he's not the only one to have had troubles.

If you don't mind me asking, what NCAA rules cause a walk on to lose their academic scholarships?

I don't mind you asking, but I don't know off the top of my head, will have to ask my brother next time I talk to him. My apologies.

It wasn't all of his academic scholarships that he lost--but enough to put a strain on his financial standing with the university.

the benefits he lost put him on the same level as most other students that went to college and almost all his peers while he was in college.

Not at all. Most students these days are on some form of financial aid via scholarships. He worked hard for those scholarships that he lost--not fair that he had to lose them simply for playing football at a D-1 school (and he wasn't in line for an athletic scholarship at all).

If he thought the athletic scholarships wouldn't be better than the academic scholarships he should have played intramurals.

He wasn't in it for the athletic scholarships. He got into A&M strictly on academics--he just happened to be very athletic and really wanted to wear a maroon and white jersey. Not everyone who plays collegiate athletics is in it purely for the scholarship allure.

Well that's awesome that he was good enough to walk on and experience it. Hate to hear it put him behind the 8 ball so much though. Hope he's doing well now.

I wasn't aware of any. I know when I went I had a partial athletic and the partial academic, so I didn't lose my academic scholarships just for playing but that's been eons ago.
