the return of Logan than to any crying BO did on TV?

I'm not saying that Logan is that great of a player but I do think he frees up others like TBJ to be even better. Seems like the improvement on D coincides with his return as much as anything.

Of course his return also coincides with us playing Idaho and UConn, but UConn at least had a pulse.

None of the remaining opponents have great offenses. If Mizzou gives up 25 or fewer ppg over that period then its real.

With the talent level Mizzou has in the secondary it wasn’t going to be a good defense this year.

It’s easy to say that now.

Most were saying that before the year. The secondary was always a huge concern.

We were so bad early because we also weren't getting any pressure. The pass rush has started to show back up and we look a little better.

I said it before the season. I thought the defense would give up 25-27 ppg this year.

I don't think it's a lock that the defense will be terrible. It could be, but it's not a certainty. If you compare the talent to 2 years ago, it's not that far below that season.

Compare the positions

At DE Harris wasn't any more proven as a player than Frazier is now. Brady and Frazier were unproven newcomers, similar to Turner, Smash, Williams, or Harold.

At DT the current roster is better. Mainly because Brantley was out due to his car wreck. TBJ is a better talent than anyone on that roster.

LB is the big advantage Brothers and Scherer were much more proven than anyone on the current roster, they also covered up a lot of deficiencies on that team.

At CB Penton was a proven player, but there were questions across from him. At S Simon was a solid player that did make mistakes, Sherrils and Wilson were young unproven players.

Ultimately I think we find that a decent part of last years defensive struggles had more to do with coaching and scheme change than talent. I don't expect the defense to be an elite defense like 2 seasons ago, but I do think the potential is there for it to be average to a little above average. Which should be enough to win at least 8 games.

Find my predictions on how many points I thought the defense would give up. I didn’t think it would be terrible, but it has been the first half of the season.

I think the defense will be ok. Not good, but not terrible like last year.

Florida is averaging just under 200 rushing YPG in conference play. Their split zone and stongside/weakside counter is quite effective. If Logan doesn't make a difference they will run all over the second level of this defense.

The problem at UF is that Mac was cooking with his own groceries on defense.

It is interesting that many here thought there was a major talent deficiency in defense and that it would be terrible before the season. Then when that was true over the first half of the season it was no longer about talent, but the coaching.

I was wrong thinking the defense would be ok. I overestimated a couple players, especially on the DL.

Losing Howard and Holmes right before the season hurt us as well.

Howard wasn't a proven player, but he was going to start. He could have had an impact on the pass rush.

Same goes for Holmes. He was probably going to start as well. Acy played really poorly to start the year, and we didn't have much to turn to for another option. Hopefully Sparks grows from his early PT.

Logan and Warren also missed the first half of the season due to academic suspension. That’s another factor that we we unaware of.

They will probably start Taylor against us. Franks has been awful and with McElwain gone you'll probably see a change.

This game will be difficult to win.

I’ve brought that up in most of my posts about the poor play in the first half of the season. Part of the problem is talent (or at least ready to play talent) and the other part is coaching.

Some of the freshmen and sophomores playing might actually end up being good, they are just needing to play major snaps too early. Sparks and Acy both fit in this category.

Nope. Not what I remember. I remember some thinking Sparks and Acy were the next great thing. Perkins was a stud if given a chance. Hilton is all world. Ulmer was lighting it up.
