He decided not to interview. This was reported several years ago. No idea if Michigan would've offered.

Get more players drafted. That was the magical words that Don James told him to do to fix his program??

Great article. Thanks.
I've gotta admit, I've got a serious crush, a Pinkel bromance. Is he perfect? Of course not. But I love how he carries himself from his subtle arrogance about "Mizzou Made, SEC this, SEC that", to his "m-kay?" ending to answers in interviews. I find it entertaining even though he doesn't mean for it to be.
And I love what he's done and is trying to build. It's easy to bag on him for not reeling in multiple 4 and 5-stars, but he knows who he is and what we are as a border school in a big-time conference. He's not going to go away from his bread and butter (3-stars with upside) to waste his time playing grab arse with ego-filled five stars like that Ohio butt-arse who had a thread devoted to him here over the weekend. Pinkel will get some 4s and 5s but only if they come with the attitude to work like a three.
And I like him as person, his divorce and DWI withstanding (there but by the grace of God go I). He graduates players. He cares about them as people and about their future. He doesn't process them out when they don't pan out dues to injury or his misevaluation. He's seems about as honest as they come in the coaching business and man of integrity and I'm damn proud he's our coach.
I'm really pulling for him to cap his career with a conference championship. He deserves it.

Great article there. Thank you for posting it.
Sounds like we dodged a bullet on the Michigan opening. I thought the "how to be a gentleman on a date" piece was funny.

It's that simple, and that complicated. Getting players drafted leads to recognition for the program, which leads to interest in the program, and leads to players who believe coming to Mizzou can help them achieve that dream. It's not that far a stretch. Getting players drafted leads to more talented players. Plus, HS coaches recognize which schools and coaches 1)take a true interest in developing their players into their full potential, and 2)follow that up with a career. He went from A to M without stopping in all the steps, but it was very wise, IMO. I get it.

Great article. Thanks for sharing. Refreshing to read something with a bit more substantive instead of the same old regurgitation of what has already been tweeted.

I was a "tag along" in a tour of the Mizzou training facility about 8 years ago with recruit families. So, I saw and heard HCGP "in action" that day. I was super impressed with the way he treated one recruit's mother. Nothing but a gentleman.
Oh, Coach Kul can give a pretty good talk. Somehow we gotta keep him.

I think you misunderstand, it's not like you can just tell the NFL to draft your players or make them "look better" on draft day. He was really saying you need to recruit better or do a better job coaching them up, that's the only thing that makes any sense.
That's about the only thing in the article that is "new info", well at least they didn't mention his big jewelry box,, you know the one with all those "championship" rings..

Glad to see a good man like Gary Pinkel getting some media attention.
It baffles the national media that Missouri can compete in the SEC. Mizzou should be fighting it out for 5th place with Kentuky and Vandy but somehow we rise up against our betters and win the eastern SEC Division.
No, he does not have a box full of championship rings. Hard to have rings and trophies when your program is not a blue blood.
What he does have is a spirited and aggressive team year in and out that can beat anyone on a given day. He has also shown that even if he moves on it is still possible for Missouri to be a winner with the right coach.

But he should have told him how to do that.

No, but I used to think we did a very poor job of promoting our players. We do better now. And we do a better job of coaching them up for the NFL. I don't think we necessarily do a better job of recruiting than we did then, however.

NFL scouts care little about what we have to say about our players. I know what youre saying, recruiting is partly about selling your success.
I just checked right now we have 23 established players in the NFL.
For comparison, Ole Miss has 16, otoh, Georgia has 37, so Mizzou may be doing slightly but really only slightly better than average, depending on who you want to sample.
Mizzou has two large metro areas to recruit from in state and no in state D1 competitor. It's not like Mizzou is in the center of some giant recruiting wasteland. Baylor and KState have 9 each, so if you want to say UGA has wasted talent, fine but others have won conferences with less.

I agree the staff has gotten better at it, but well see if it's a trend that continues, for example if Kuligowski decides to take that promotion elsewhere do we know we can replace him with someone as capable?
Bottom line, we'll need to coach better or recruit better if not both, to get to the next level, and you can decide which is more likely.
