A few things JQ.
That's where I sit now, but I have my doubts about him. Based on what you ask? His track record so far as HC. I did give him kudos for turning last years season around, but it did come with some embarrassing losses and even some embarrassing wins.
What's equally "goofy" and "silly" is your thought process that if anyone criticizes him, we must hate him. You've poured that nonsense out here, and on the Rant, and it's irritating as hell. I like you as a poster, but some of us older ones here have lived through more wars than you (the 80's and much of the 90's) so if we come across as pessimistic, so be it, we've earned it as far as I'm concerned.
Again, I hope Odom is the answer, time will tell, but I have my doubts...

I also guarantee you were or would have been saying the same things in the beginning of Pinkel's era.

I want to see how the season starts: Each of the last 2 seasons has started off as an unmitigated disaster, then after a half season of apparently learning by losing, they dig themselves out to mediocrity.
How about we start the season mediocre, and progress to good? And then not regress for the bowl game. Yeah, that'd be nice. And not get excessively pumped up after beating the walking dead.

You can cast yourself in whatever lot you like, but there is definitely a significant portion of our fans that just don't like him. Not only on this board but I've heard it MANY times at games and around campus. It's 100% real, and it goes beyond poor results and I struggle to figure out why. I've met him a few times. He's a pleasant guy. He's grateful for the fans (even though we suck as a whole), and above all the guy has a serious, deep rooted love of Mizzou.
He's shown me a willingness to adapt and change. He's not as stubborn as other coaches I've followed. Maybe he's out of his depth as a HC, but I don't think so. I think he's learning and improving. It would have been really easy for the team to fold up shop last year after a 1-5 start, but they didn't.
I think the biggest disconnect here is people underestimate how difficult this job is under normal circumstances and also underestimate the difficulty of the situation he inherited. What's most confusing to me is it seems to be the same group that is of the opinion that we are destined to have bad things happen to us also are the first ones to jump on the coach for not being better. I mean, which is it?
This is year 3. Mostly his guys and it's time for the defense to take a significant step forward. If they do that, with the talent we have on offense, we could be sneaky good this year. Let's see how it plays out.

cynicism

I'm still a bit dumbfounded how great we were in 2013 and good in 2014 but got so little long term out of it. I mean maybe Pinkel could have kept up his cycle of giving massive hope of greatness every few years, but I really thought after 2013 we were going to get a permanence at the next level of competitiveness. Undeniably heartbroken

I think his personal life chaos ended his chance at getting to the next level.

GP made multiple decisions that ended up failing.
#1) Moving resources en mass to the SE footprint with zero established relationships and signing non factors. There were 25 players signed out of the SE in the 2013-15 classes. 5 have taken primary reps. Hitting on 20% of your players signed doesn't work at any program.
#2) Leaving Brian Jones and Bruce Walker to recruit Texas after sending Henson and Grinch into the south. Jones was a non factor his entire career and Walker was sleepwalking his last two years as a recruiter.
#3) Overruling Henson's desire to hire his own QB coach and moving Hill so he could hire Pat Washington.
#4) Overruling Ricker's plan to start Pendleton and Adams when Mitch Hall and Taylor Chappell proved they couldn't play beside each other.
#5) He should have let Kuligowski go when he passed over him a second consecutive time when hiring a DC. Begging him to stay and letting that toxic relationship exist sent the wrong message to the players.
