Current South Alabama HC is making $565K. Not sure what Heupel makes, but probably that or more.

Money may not matter much if he wants a head coaching job (and knowing that if he does well it's a stepping stone.)

South Bama has narrowed their list down to 20 potential guys.

Cross's $600K comes off the books. The can split that 3 ways and give it to Elarbee, Heupel, and Haley as far as I am concerned. That would put Heupel at $900K.

South Alabama paid their previous coach $565K. I'd make him ponder that pay cut.

IDK. OC at an SEC school seems like just as good of a jumping off point as HC at South Alabama...and we'll likely pay him more.

He can also really boost host stock with another yr with Lock.

Do u think heupel and lock are having private conversations? It seems if they’re not both staying they might both go. They need each other to look good next year.

Another great year for both of them here, means a much bigger payout for each later.

So no money to be spent on the new assistant?

I would guess that Walters is the new DC. He and BO work well together (BO will still call the defense, at least for another 1-2 years) Walters would get a bump to 500k.
Use the extension for more to all assistants, and hire a couple assistant coaches.

The 10th assistant starts in January I think.

Sounds like he's interested in S. Bama by putting his name out there.

#1. That $600K isn't the only money that will be available for distribution.

#2. Of course all of the assistants will get a pay raise.

Sure find money for new assistants.

However if the DC is Walters. The money saved there could be used for Keeping Huepel El and Brick.

Walters will be a DC in title only. So he shouldn't receive the pay of actual DC's

500k isn’t the going rate for a DC.

Even if it’s Walters, BO still will be hiring 2 new assistants.

A position coach to replace Cross to get to 9 assistant coaches.

Then I also believe that the NCAA will allow 10 assistants, starting in January 2018.

No 500k won't get you a real DC.

Walters will a DC in title only. His pay should reflect that

Yea that’s why I think if he’s named DC, his salary will be around 500k.

I've been thinking about this for a couple of weeks now.

The only way Lock goes is if Huepel gets a coaching gig elsewhere. And guys like Huepel are what's hot.

That's why I hope to hell someone is being groomed under Huepel to take the reigns when he leaves.

There is no grooming any of the current offensive staff to be the QB coach.

I agree. Why would he take an HC job just to be taking one. I think his floor is higher than that. Another successful year, and he might get a Lower power 5 school as an HC.

if lock comes back, and the offense clicks like its supposed to, he could do better than south roll tide

Right, this my worry above all. He's done a great job developing Lock. That will be the hardest thing to replace if he goes elsewhere.

Carta-Samuel has worked with Lock a lot. I would be shocked to see him get an assistant job somewhere in the next couple of years.

I still haven't seen anything that puts Lock in the top 5-7 QB's in the draft. He might climb the ladder in workouts and I might prefer to have him leading Mizzou's team than any other QB out there, but I'm not sure he's yet getting that kind of respect. Probably seen as a system QB with an arm.
