DGB On Special Teams

What are everyone's thoughts on this?
Personally, I don't like the idea of DGB being on the punt block team. I don't know that I'm worried about him getting injured so much as I want his hands fresh and ready to catch the ball. I don't want them hurting and numb from having just gotten his hands on a punt.

Not real sure I want my number one receiving target throwin his fingers up to block punts. And trying to rush passed/through much heavier defenders. Seems unnecessary.
If Pinkel wants to explore this theory, I have to think there are other big guys on the roster that can move.
Seems pretty hokie.

I'm not sure about this either. Why risk his hands? Unless he's shown some major blocking ability we don't know about and they really need him in that role, I don't see the reasoning for this.
He breaks a hand, or even a finger or two - and misses time - BOOM.
ETA - another viewpoint, from Matter's column...

quote:
The 6-6 wideout lined up on the edge for the punt block team, putting his speed and wingspan to good use as the rusher from the left side of the formation. He hasn’t nailed down a job on the punt block team, Gary Pinkel said, but he’s in the running. “If we decide to put him there, you’ve got a guy with remarkable speed and he’s 6-6,” Pinkel said. “So his wingspan, his reach, you’re probably going to get a foot closer (to the punter) than with a guy who’s 6 foot, 6-1. He’s just a really good athlete, so we’ll see what happens.”
(I’m already seeing some tweets from fans freaking out over Green-Beckham playing on special teams. Seriously? He’s absolutely built for this role. Imagine the nightmares he'll give the punt protection team. Imagine the disruption he could cause in that role — not to mention, his ability to command attention on one corner and free up another rusher on the other side. And don’t forget, you have an All-American return specialist in Marcus Murphy hoping to feast on the punt team’s focus on blocking the front wall. If Missouri can manufacture some momentum-shifting plays in the kicking game, why not use its best athlete in a game-changing role like that?)

Anything to help Murphy is great in my book. Mizzou will have to score some special teams TDs to pull off some big wins this year. This only helps.
If people are worried about DGB, he shouldn't even be on the field then. He could get a cheap shot on any given play. He has to block during run plays, so would you take him off for every run play? Why would you even want to throw him the ball? That just guarantees he will get hit.
Punt blockers don't take any direct shots. There is little risk of an injury.

It's not even broken fingers. Just a jammed finger will affect his ability to catch. Maybe I'm just a girly boy, but even in high school, blocking a punt left your hands/arms stinging. Just don't see that as a good thing if he has to turn right around and catch a ball.

If you don't understand why teams don't risk their most talented players on special teams, then we'll just have to agree to disagree. The risk might be less trying to block a punt than trying to take someones head off on a kick team, but I still don't see where it makes sense if he's as talented as heralded.

Many teams do put their talented players on special teams. Mizzou is late to that party.

Risky move, but if he does well then the coaches will be seen as geniuses. I want to see him play well for you guys and would hate it for you if he gets hurt...

I'm in favor of using the best talent on special teams. Turning points in games happen with special team play - momentum shifts and big plays.

Going to honest, I have absolutely no idea what to expect from this year. I believe we could be absolutely awful as much as I believe that we could win big.
No idea.

You know, after thinking about this issue more, and researching a little... Dorial has been compared, physically, to Julio Jones. When he was at Alabama, in addition to being their star receiver, he also was on the field-goal blocking unit, and played on kick-off returns - not as the return man, but as his leading blocker because of his size, speed and reach. Because he was one of the top athletes on the team, and they wanted him in on potentially game-changing plays.
Lots of teams put their best athletes on special teams in addition to their regular position. Any player can get hurt on any play. So after considering it, I've calmed a bit. Let's just see what happens - he may not be a natural blocker and it's all moot.

I don't think it's the end of the world. I just wouldn't do it. Having said that, I hope he blocks one punt every game and still goes on to catch for 150 yards and a TD.

Guy's a monster. I hope we use him to the best of his potential and make it work. If that involves him contributing in more than on portion of the game, I'm all for it.
I pray we make him a good as he appeared to be destined for out of high school, if we don't there's a real problem.
Sometimes prospects are busts, but I don't think we can afford to have the top rated prospect be a bust at this point in our program's history.

DGB will block a punt this year.
Caveat...he will catch said block and take it in for 6.
Then, he will kick the extra point, and catch his kick.
Y'all will still bitch.
Wasting him you will say.
And I will say, "No, now we must make sure he can infiltrate the Russians"
Then, you laugh, next thing we know.
DGB BANGIN' RUSSIAN BROADS.
It all starts with Special Teams.

I think he'll end up being built like Calvin Johnson
