James Franklin named the starter today. I bet you are all as shocked as I am.

I actually am shocked. I really didn't think GP would announce anything. I figured we'd just roll into week one and Franklin would just start and nothing would have ever been said.

It does sound like Mauk will get playing time this year. Pinkel wants to get him more experience.

COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri Head Football Coach announced this evening that senior James Franklin has been named the starting quarterback for the 2013 season. The Corinth, Texas, native has been atop the depth chart all fall, but was locked in a competitive battle with redshirt freshman Maty Mauk.

I guess not a big surprise either, but I noticed Franklin apparently wasn't in a competitive battle with Berk. I wonder if Berk transfers seeing the writing on the wall between Mauk and this years freshmen.

Meh.. The guy has caused like 4 turnovers in 2 scrimmages.

I really don't think they're sold on him taking over next year.

I bet Berk emerges as the back up, and it's a 4 man (realistically 3 man) competition for the job next year.

Printz is better than Mauk and I think they know it.

I think you're right mogray. I think if JF gets hurt early on, GP will go the safe route and let Berk finish out this year, partially due to last year's experience.

I think next year will be interesting though. I don't know that Berk is a long term answer and could see Printz being the QB of the future.

I could very well be wrong..

But I just don't see them investing much playing time in Mauk if they truly believe Printz is better, and how could you not?

That being said.. I bet Mauk gets some snaps against Murray St. Can't bring in a guy with his HS numbers, pump up the fanbase, and then never give him a snap.

I just think when things go down for real in the SEC, and JF gets hurt or whatever.. I'd put more money on it being Berk than Mauk getting the call.

Didn't see the Pinkel video until just now.. damn, maybe they will work Mauk in. I just don't see it happening much in SEC play..

And it sounded like he said Chase Daniels.

I haven't seen any video, and have just been getting twitter updates.

What does Mauk's problem seem to be so far?

Turnovers. Mental mistakes.

Just not getting comfortable in the pocket and rushing, trying to thread the needle, or something else?

Think he's had like 5 pics and a fumble in the scrimmages, didn't double check those stats.

When DGB was interviewed ab the qb competition he basically complained about Mauks style and said Franklin was perfect.

I'll try to check out some Mizzou Network shite tonight. I thought DGB and Mauk played with each other on the all star teams in high school and were buddies, I figured they would have some chemistry on the field.

So they'll put Mauk in as a back with a passing threat, that's not a bad deal.

It seems like forever ago, but Franklin scored a touchdown on a run in the Gameday Victory over Oklahoma from the backfield. So much has changed since that day.

I remember that.

He lined up under center, wasn't in the backfield.

He'll be ok. Just hope he doesn't send us notes via Instagram again this year.

Ah, was he under center? I knew it was something weird and unexpected. QB under center would do that back then.

Gabbert was lined up as a wide receiver on backup James Franklin's 3-yard scoring run with 6:36 left.

I'll never forget that game.

I thought we had finally broken through.

Then TT and Nubs happened.

He wasn't under center for that play. It was basically just a Wildcat formation with Gabbert out wide and Josey came in motion.

And seeing Josey as #41 just feels weird now.

I'm excited to see what Franklin can do this year. Last year was so brutal, but Yost's insistence on running him constantly didn't help his health.
