Sure you can. Plenty of examples of players coaches failing.

Yep.

If Baker's buyout is 950k, and the contracts is 3 yrs at 2.5m per, it means LSU bid 8.45m for 3 years of Baker. He is likely there only 1 or 2 years. If he is great, he will get a good HC offer after 1 or 2. And if he doesn't make major strides on their defense, he probably isn't retained 3 years.

So LSU is likely either paying 3.45m for 1 year or 5.95m for 2 years of Baker.

Mizzou felt reasonably safe that paying Baker 2.2m per for 3 years (I think) with that buyout would be safe.

This is part of why Mizzou's endowment is larger than LSU's.

LSU is also paying the buyout of their last DC and his staff for $5.4 million.

With the buyouts, salary, and staff pay LSU is probably paying $12 to $13 million over the next 2 years.

If Baker only stays 1 year it is a really bad investment. The only way this is a good investment for LSU is a NC and at the very least a final 4. They have the talent and are paying big NIL money for it.

Miss the playoff over the next 2 years Kelly and Baker are on the hot seat. NIL money will start to go down a little.

If they don't make it within 3 years the coaches and AD are in trouble. The money shows the commitment a Blueblood like LSU has to winning. They have to. Those crazy fans will turn on the coaches and AD like a pack of rabid racoons. Imagine if Auburn or Ole Miss or A&M make it to the playoff and LSU does not.

It could be a hard road ahead. A&M and Auburn may have found their coaches. The Lane Train is chuggin. Alabama is not going anywhere but up. Florida looked improved at the end of the year. Arkansas played them close the last 2 years. It will be fun to watch how it plays out.

Let's just hope Eli can fend off the blueblood sharks circling Columbia going forward. Those programs will do anything to win. Other shoes may drop.
