The harsh reality is that Mizzou's program design is built to cap out at 8-4 or 9-3.
To go from "good" to "elite" in college football, a program needs three structural advantages:
In-state blue-chip talent density (like Georgia, Florida, Texas, or Ohio State).
A massive NIL collective budget that can buy depth across both trenches.
A coaching staff that coaches to win big games rather than avoid losing them.
Mizzou doesn't have #1, gets outspent on #2 by the SEC heavyweights, and has a staff for #3 that defaults to playing turtle against top-tier competition.
Which of these are within our control?

Outaider perspective, Mizzou has always seemed to be on the cusp of moving to the next level: in the big 12 I recall times when you finished in the top 5, including 2007 if not for OU you might’ve played for the natty (and I’m sure there are other seasons that als indicate this potential, but off the top of my head 2007 sticks out)
Also when you joined the SEC you won the east twice and made it to Atlanta while programs like Kentucky and ole Miss haven’t.
So there have been signs that Mizzou can be more.
Now with Indiana doing what they did, many fans of other programs are wondering why not them too? Of course it’s easier said than done, and if everyone can do it, then everyone would be doing it.
Indiana gambled and took a risk because they had nothing to lose. Maybe the previous success you’ve had has made it harder to take those risks since for the most part, at least since Mizzou has been in the SEC, it’s been at worst average and at best very good, while generally being above average more years than not. So taking a risk may be harder than a traditional bottom feeder like IU since they have nothing to lose.
Maybe the risk doesn’t have to be as big, but based on the past success of being close or peeking over the ceiling, it doesn’t seem unfathomable that Mizzou can break through and have a dominant run a few years.
Perhaps some of the issues you cited (proximity to talent and resources) may make it tough to sustain yearly,
But in this day and age, and with the potential shown, it definitely can be done in CoMo

And that first big win over LSU really made it feel like we had a coach/coaching staff that was leaving the "play it safe when the pressure rises" mentality behind. Sighhhhhhhhhh.

They had the most loses all time until last year.

What Curt Cignetti did with the 42nd best ranked roster last season was crazy impressive ...
Not sure he has the roster this season to replicate it but his scheme works well in the Big 10 ...

His scheme has worked everywhere he has been.
