quote:

We have ideas of what star college athletes are like. Draped in the Mr. T Starter Kit gold jewelry. Going to just enough classes to stay eligible and to keep people from laughing when they hear the words “student athlete” paired together. Cruising the streets in a shiny new SUV with the title mysteriously missing. Indifferent to the day-to-day concerns of the average student.

That image is shattered when you see Terry Beckner Jr. up close. Make no mistake, when he steps out of his car, there is no doubt that this is a man who is likely bound for the NFL. A towering hulk of a man, Beckner has football player written all over him. But then you might notice, he didn’t step out of a spotless new Escalade. He crawled out from behind the wheel of a beat-up old Chrysler 300 with a bashed up rearview mirror. (Get that fixed before the Liberty Bowl, please!)

I couldn't access the link at work but I never viewed Terry as "one of those guys"......he always appeared to have his head screwed on straight.

You will also notice a complete absence of swagger in this big man on campus. The East St. Louis native is as humble as a pie-eyed freshman. He’s shy around fans, and quietly shops for his essentials at “No Gas” like the rest of the student body.

Every Mizzou fan knows Beckner was one of the most highly touted recruits in recent Mizzou history, and everyone also knows that Beckner could have left Columbia last year for the money and fame offered by the NFL. But Beckner showed us why every Mizzou fan ought to have a Beckner jersey in their closet, when he stuck around to help his team, to get his degree, and to secure his place in Tiger history.

Beckner comes from humble beginnings and the promise of financial security is a strong motivator. Few have the patience and resolve to delay gratification and to stay true to their goals. Terry Beckner Jr. is not like most men though. He is a man of quiet resolve. His teammates will tell you that he has learned to become a leader and to speak up in the clubhouse when something needs to be said. But few fans see that side of him. He is quiet by nature. He keeps a private Twitter account and rarely tweets. He keeps his responses to media and adoring fans to one or two soft words. The roar of passion is reserved for his inner circle.

There’s something else you don’t see from Beckner. After two devastating knee injuries, you never saw complaints or self-pity. You didn’t see stories in the newspapers of scrapes with the law, so common amongst other young men in the spotlight. All you saw from Beckner was work.

And when he returned to Mizzou, you saw love. He stayed to get his degree because of the love for his family. You saw dedication to support the team and coaches he loves. And you saw a young man stay true to the school he loves, when the world came calling with briefcases full of money.

Because of all of this, every one of us Tiger fans should be the biggest Terry Beckner Jr. fans in the world when his name gets called by the NFL. Beckner is in the same class as our superstar quarterback Drew Lock, but Beckner did most of his work under the radar. He deserves a little spotlight. He deserves some love right back. I say, retire #5. He’s a legend.

If you don’t like and root for TBJ then something is wrong with you.

I hope the dude makes millions in the NFL. He’s been a great Tiger

I remember him breaking down as he committed to MIZZOU live on ESPN

Talk about a humble, dedicated and caring young man.

I'd love to see KC draft him. TBJ playing 5 technique in a 3-4 next to Houston or Ford would be fun to watch.

He would instantly improve the run defense. He can chase a play down behind a pulling guard and set the edge vs power to his side. It would be awesome to get him. There are enough teams that like him at 3 Tech that he will be gone. KC needs a solution at Safety and LB is a close second. If he is there at 64, I would like to see them take him.

I met Terry Beckner Sr. At the bama game (i noticed his unique TBJ tshirt). Told him I was a big fan of his son and I’m sure he’s excited about him playing on Sundays next year. He replied he was more excited that Terry came back to get his degree.

Much respect to TBJ and TBS and thanks for your four years!

We've been lucky to have super talented good guys like TBJ, Drew Lock, Marcus Golden, and Maclin.

I really hope he has a long NFL career. So many guys have come out of ESL and so many haven't been able to stay the course, it would be awesome to see him be one of those to make it.
