Mullen at UF just makes sense. It was a mistake not getting him 7 years ago, just as it was a mistake to not hire him over McElwain. He gets UF, knows what it takes to win a championship here and maybe most importantly he wants to be in Gainesville.

too bad we didn't take advantage of a down eastern div over the last 8 years. thanks foley. now we may end up with gundy in knoxville. no more cakewalks to atlanta for sure now. uga was always solid at the least, but was really our only worry in the east. now they're better and tenn looks like they may have stepped in a pile of golden dog shite. fricked up into a great situation.

otoh, will be nice to have a strong east again. fun seasons.

Lol, Gundy is a meathead. God, I don't miss watching Big 12 football and OSU. He wins his division one year and finally the Big 12 the next, and everyone seems to forget that he has been OU's bitch every year save two over there. And then the year he almost breaks through and manages to beat OU, he ends up being part of the "6" in a bad 6-7 Iowa State team.

I'm not saying he's not an upper tier coach, but to only win the Big 12 once in 13 years - a period when that conference was probably at it's very worst - I don't know why anyone acts like he is some sure-fire badass if he ends up at a Big 6 SEC team.

Wrong. Again. Jackie Sherrill took them bowling 6 times, had 7 winning seasons and won the West in 1998. They had recent success before he arrived.

The east being good is fun when we have a coach to take advantage of it. Mullen got destroyed by UGA 31-3. They had 103 yards passing and 177 yards rushing vs UGA.

Since 1998 (their only Division victory of all time), they've bowled 12 times.

Mullen is the reason behind 8 of those bowls. How am I wrong?

MSU has only won the West once, and the SEC once total.

He took over a dumpster fire and left it in a respectable place regardless of what MSU fans think.

Having 8 of the 12 bowling years in the past 18 years is pretty impressive.

MSU is the 3rd worst program in the SEC. They are just a hair above Vanderbilt and Kentucky in all time wins and has like 2 fewer all time losses than UK.

MSU is bad. Very bad.

In the 9 years pre-Mullen, they won 37 games. In the 9 years with Mullen, they won 69.

He has proven an ability to develop a QB. He has proven an ability to field a decent offense. He has proven to be able to hire decent coordinators.

He is not a perfect hire.

But what he does have is:
SEC experience- Check
Championship pedigree- (as an assistant) Check
An ability to make a serviceable offense and defense - check

The only thing we don't know about is his recruiting at a major school like Florida, and his big game coaching, but when you are so out talented, especially in the SEC west, I am not surprised by his record against the top 25.

Or did Stricklin want him from the getgo?

I have a feeling that they gave Chip a “take it or leave it” offer and we’re not flexible on any concessions.

Dan probably got a major salary upgrade and awesome job security under Scott.

I still think the coach search was window dressing and Stricklin just couldn't go after Mullen from the beginning or a lot of fans would have accused him of wanting an old friend for comfort level. Rumors got out about Kelly and Frost and Stricklin damn well he didn't intend to get or want either of them.

The storyline of weekend calls out of the blue makes just that...a story. I no longer trust Stricklin whether or not Mullen does real well (and I hope he does)...something tells me I smell dead bait.

I agree . I wouldn’t be surprised if he gave Kelly a low offer and Kelly actually told him the price was close . And that’s how the Kelly talks got going . Either Mullen was his top guy or he can’t sell the program to coaches . Kelly and Frost will both sign deals for a lot less then Mullen. I hope this is not a sign of him being not Foley and being scared to hire top rated coaches because he knows he can’t control them. I wish if Mullen was his top guy that he just waiting to the end of the season and made the deal instead of making the program look bad offering guys he wasn’t even going to hire.

Seeing as Kelly, Frost and Gundy all said no I think he panicked and over paid to get Mullen.

So the AD sabotages the program and trolls the fans and uses up our good will to hire his old friend? I doubt that. Imo Stricklin has never hired a HC in football and he didn't know how to negotiate and sell the brand to get a top coach.so after the first 3 nos he held his nose and picked Mullen. You don't take the big wigs on a cross country plane ride as window dressing. Chip Kelly, Scott Frost and Mike Gundy would rather be at Nebraska, UCLA and Oklahoma state than UF. Its not the coaches it's the man selling the vision. That search for a candidate was like Mac looking for a DC.

Jackie was good, but Mullen is even recognized by mad MSU posters as the guy that took Miss State to the next level on here.

Add in the SEC west during Jackie's good years was rather average, compared to now. Where the West has an insane gauntlet. Just look at UF's record vs the West compared to the East this last 8 years.

I was anti Mac like you brother. Because he proved he couldn't win here in year 3 after Michigan. It was obvious, the signs where all pointing towards him leaving(though gladly sooner than expected).

You need to at least give Mullen a chance. Stay skeptical sure, but don't sell out all hope before a single game.

You know his offense works at UF
You know he isn't going to have a four win season
You know he knows the SEC
You know he has a pretty good recruiting staff right now.

So relax. Let it play out. No point in being absurdly negative before year one. End of the day we don't know how it will go, but got to not stress out and assume failure.

He met with Kelly
He talked to Frost

Neither came. That's not using good will. That's him doing his job, and getting the best option left.

As for Tagg...you really think he leaves Oregon after one year? You know that's far more unlikely than it was made out to be, right. He would piss off the entire AD landscape doing that.

Also Mac had Collins..who was a really good DC...

I'm talking about when Collins left and Mac waited months to hire Randy.

Yes Taggart would leave and he's bring Mario and possibly Leavitt with him. We don't need two great staffs at Miami and fsu. Mullen can't out recruit them.
