I'm not the kind of guy to criticize people for complaining (except when it becomes pathological like TJ or your Franks shtick).

but the offense as a whole wasn't a problem today so I'm not sure why people are bitching.

You're literally in a thread talking about the offense and the people complaining about it.

quote:

And people are calling Pierce and Toney our "best players," but idk. Pierce is already heavily involved in the offense. Scarlett played poorly in the first two games but he also hadn't played football in a year. Those two are fine in the roles they're in.

Pierce is averaging ten yards a run but only gets six touches.

Toney does something with the ball every time he touches it and is only averaging 1.2 touches a game. They are our most explosive players.

quote:

Toney is a really good playmaker and I'd like to see some creativity in getting him the ball, but we have other talented WRs who are way more polished than Toney,

We haven't completed over 10 passes in two weeks now, so I highly doubt our receivers are going to be utilized the same way Toney could and should be utilized. For as polished as they are, if we can't deliver it to them consistently it's kind of pointless to have this conversation.

quote:

He's not even close to Percy and anyone who makes that comparison needs a lobotomy ASAP.

He should be used in the Percy role, and he should get more than 1.2 touches a game.

There's reason to complain, and it's mostly that the offense lacks a serious passing threat and we are either unable or unwilling to utilize any kind of special playcalling to cover it up -- we had a reverse that went for a long gain this game, but it's been pretty dry on offense outside of some late game drives when the game is already in hand.

I just want to talk about football. That’s why I come here.

I can be happy with a big win and question the distribution of the ball at the same time. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Jeez guys. If you actually like football you should be able to do both.

Criticizing me for criticizing people is sillier than anything I've said.

I'm not saying, "We won, so there's no discussion to be had!" I'm saying that it's weird to complain about Pierce's touches when he was second on the team in touches and that it's hyperbolic and reactionary to call Pierce or Toney our best players.

I would like to see Toney get more looks in the future, be it from bubble screens, wildcat, whatever, but since Swain, Cleveland, et all made the most of their touches, I don't have a problem going their way. Getting simple reads to Toney would help simplify the offense a bit for Franks, sure, no argument there.

Toney probably isn't getting touches because

(1) the offense is being designed to Franks' strengths - posts, corners, digs, flys, outs

(2) our success running up the middle (sans UK) hasn't necessitated gimmick reverses and sweeps

(3) he has major durability concerns and is not a good blocker, will need at least a year to catch up S&C-wise

(4) started year in the doghouse due to off the field issues - has he practiced his way back into the rotation? We dunno. Him being on KO is a good chance to earn PT, but we saw how little that helped Lemons

I guess it would be easier to say "Mullen is stupid" or "Franks sucks" though.

I guarantee if I break down the passes again, we will see that he is throwing downfield (intermediate/deep) at least 50% of the time.

This is not an offense designed around his strengths if this is the case. He is not accurate nor prone to good decisions when throwing downfield.

Which leads to the question as to why we throw it so often on first down if our running game is so successful.

We're not asking him to block, we're asking him to make yards and be a distraction. When he's on the field you MUST know where he is and tool your defense around him -- if he ever touches the ball. If he doesn't touch the ball and the defense knows he's just window dressing they put one guy on him and call it a night.

I think it would be shockingly easier to talk football and not caricature other people's opinions or reduce them to nonsense. As they say: You ought to ironman your opponent, not strawman them.

Yes. Those worked well. Suspect we know this but didn't use them vs UT because we didn't need to. It worked vs CSU don't see why they wouldn't use them again going forward
