Wanted to continue by talking about Brad's defense.

Since the last post was lengthy, thought I make a separate post for the defense led by Brad White. I think it's Sumrall's best hire. More impressive than Buster.
His defense is a run stop first defense but he stresses line play to make it happen and I don't know if we have the personnel for it. So expect a lot of light boxes which stresses our LBs to make plays given our interior D-line inexperience. Makes sense since he wants to implement a nose tackle. It's a big ask for the current roster.
Atleast he'll disguise coverages and use multiple fronts like 3-4, 4-3, 3-3-5 (I miss those Charlie Strong days), and the obvious 4-2-5. Not a fan of implementing the JACK position because it requires dropping back into pass coverage. Idk if Woods is ready for that?
But expect an aggressive defense with our LBs being a part of the pass rush. Don't like the fact he'll use quarters coverage. Don't think we can just generate pressure with our line only.
I have no idea how our secondary plays in this defense. Is it bump and run or is it the bend don't break style of play? If anyone has an idea let me know.
Overall, they need time to evaluate the roster and go out and recruit in the portal. Defense will improve this season like the offense. But I'm expecting a big jump next season if we utilize the portal effectively.

Haven't really looked at it much but have heard people saying his defense puts a lot of pressure on the secondary to be on point.

Agree that Auby is the first real test but if we look like FSUcks in the first two games it will be a bad sign.

FAU has a good enough passing attack to test our pass defense a little if that QB can avoid the pressure some.

Idk about you. But i prefer a shutout this saturday. As fans we have had enough playing down to the competition. If there's a standard, you play to it. It's how you maintain consistency.

Might be hard to totally shut them down the whole game but their offensive numbers in road games are night and day worse than their games at home. Their head coach calls that fast paced offense I think and he has had top 10 offenses at a power 4 school and another G6 school. I guess with a few turnovers we might can keep them out of the endzone.

Some context... defense held FAU to 4.1 YPP in the 1st half despite FAU's QB having 36 attempts.
DL disappointed, but secondary looked better than I expected.
FAU also is the only team in FBS returning the entire offensive staff and offensive players - #1 team last year in passing offense, and #22 offense overall.

I am glad we got this hurry up offense for a tuneup for Auburns stuff but want to look at the tape for what was going on a couple of those drives. We will know a lot more in the Auburn game. Same with the offensive tackles in pass protection as FAU had no one really that could test them.

The D line has me a little worried but watching a condensed video with about half the plays on it the defense maybe wasnt quite as bad on the D line as thought. That QB most times was getting the ball out real fast. We let them just outblock us near the goal line a few times - not really sure if that was more on the D line or the linebackers a couple of plays as I think a couple of them the TE just took the linebacker out leaving a big gap open. I did notice Woods get handled once and another time he should have had a straight shot to the QB and let the lineman catch him and push him out of the play after he had made a move around him - almost like he wasn't focused enough. Curious how Woods looks when we don't play this hurry up air raid style of offense. Also curious to see what it looks like when people break the defensive tape down.

Yes, it was FAU, the top passing offense from last yr that returned all their main pieces who run an extremely up tempo offense.
We had a new DC, new players starting and still held them to like 4.4 yards per play and didnt really allow any big plays. Ill admit the dinks n dunks were frustrating but thats the world we chose to live in to prevent the big gainers.
Yes, the defense has gotta improve, but anyone thinking we were gonna just shut them out isnt being logical given the facts of the matter.
Defense wasnt great last yr, a drastic turnaound isnt gonna happen game 1 vs that type of opponent.
A repeat vs Auburn and then we can get nervous .

Offense did what was expected.
Defense was bad. I know you're getting shite for saying it. But honestly I didn't like the effort. When it came to the D-line, only 2 sacks. Kam James came ready to play so gotta appreciate that. Not sure what happened with Woods or McCray but they'll improve significantly next week. Shoutout to Lyons for making the staff realize he deserves a lot more snaps than McCloud. Finally got over that gruesome ankle injury. Only 6 TFLs total. There was no energy.
Linebackers are going to carry this run defense and will help the interior line with the pass rush.
Secondary was not good. Cormani still plays like he's in high school which is embarrassing. Hanks was a bit exposed today but he needs more reps so I expect him to improve big time next week. I saw him get a PD so a positive for him. Figured Dijon would come in the game and show the staff that he should be the starter.
The nickel spot is still in competition between DJ Coleman and Kanye Clark. Let's see if one of them wants to take the job and run with it. Or throw in Bryce because he has the experience. That will be an interesting development to follow.
Overall, not happy with the defense. But knowing Sumrall with his defensive background, a lot of film review and hard practices coming up this week. Will expect a better effort from them next Saturday. Hopefully a shut out like I was expecting from this game. Not concerned. It's only week 1. Mistakes were bound to happen.

It’s one game and we’ll see how the defense hopefully develops but it’s nice to have talks about how the team can be better instead of wondering if our coaches are complete retards for a change
