We definitely need to purge the UAA. We have a terrible fundraising apparatus. Gary needs to become "a" booster. He does not need to be "the" booster.
I have been posting about this on other sites, but you guys are going to have to hear me rant too.
I went to undergrad at Washington and Lee University. There is 1,600 students there. They have fundraising down to a science. Alumni get phone calls and emails all the time. They let us know what initiatives are going on at the school, what are money would be used on, and how much they would appreciate us helping the school achieve those goals. We have a 5 year reunion cycle, so most classes keep engaged and stay connected. Even if we aren't donating at that time, they do a great job of getting our opinion and making us feel heard. You can tell they care about the University and its mission.
I have two graduate degrees from UF and am a season ticket holder. I get no phone calls except when its my chance to renew. They never communicate opportunities to get involved. They don't ask for money (other than spam emails) much less make me feel valued and like my opinion matters. To be honest, they don't care one bit about me and it doesn't seem like they care about the school.
Obviously athletics is not a good way to compare the schools, but we can look at endowments to see how they are at fundraising overall. W&L, with 1,600 students, has a $2 billion dollar endowment. UF, with over 60,000 students, has an endowment of $2.4 billion dollars. A school with less than 3% of the of students has an endowment that is only 15% less in size. It's mind blowing.
