I'll add the only fcs school I wouldn't mind playing is North Dakota State. At least they're somewhat interesting given their dominance at that level.

But even them...

This might be the first time since the 90s we've opened with 3 straight night games.

I think we did a few years back in the season we beat Miami.

Correct.

I just checked Wikipedia for the 2019 season:

Game 1 vs Miami @ 7pm
Game 2 vs UT Martin @ 7:30 pm
Game 3 @Kentucky (when Franks broke his leg) @ 7pm

I also forgot about that too, as I totally didn't even watch (not even the replay) the UT Martin game.

I did go to the Miami game in Orlando. If I remember correct, Marco Wilson got a dumbasre penalty on 4th and long (though the refs might have incorrectly called it on another player, but I am sure Marco f'd up) that almost cost us the game.

I just remember Franks keeping Miami in that game. We probably roll them that night if Trask was made the starter in the offseason.

Trask playing, and we win by 30

That game was literally only close because of the turnovers and the stupid penalties.

Agree totally.

I think without Trask, Mullen's run at UF would've been 2-3 years tops. His offense never really looked good with Franks or Emory.

The best thing about that game, besides beating Miami despite how crappy we played, was that our crappy play produced one of the all time great GIFS:

Hopefully Billy does what should've been done in 2020 and 21 — run up the frickin score on them!

Good to have faith but I would put the chances of us having the #1 class near zero unless it was due to having many more recruits. We have some active boosters but not like a few other schools do and that will make sure they get more top 150 recruits with NIL money.

Florida football: Anonymous coaches pump brakes on new Gators coach Billy Napier
NICK KOSKO 21 hours ago
quote:

The Florida Gators enter a new era with head coach Billy Napier, whom the school hired from Louisiana. Despite his success with the Ragin’ Cajuns, his tenure with the Gators might get off to a slow start, according to anonymous coaches in the SEC who spoke to Athlon Sports as part of their college football preview magazine.

“Billy Napier was a great hire for these guys, but when you dig in and start looking at his history, it clashes with what we expect Florida to look like, and maybe with what their fans demand,” one anonymous coach said. “Billy and (offensive coordinator) Rob Sale didn’t win on spread/tempo at Louisiana. Look at the tape. They’re gonna come in and get big and mean and try to run first. They’re creative and modern, but it’s built on some really old-school stuff. How will that play when everyone wants Steve Spurrier?”

Florida might’ve struck gold with the hire of Napier, but as far as national titles are concerned, like the program was used to at one point, it might take a longer rebuild with less flashiness.

“In terms of pure talent, the roster is probably fourth-best in the East and lower than that in the West,” another anonymous coach said. “But they didn’t have much to start with at Louisiana, either. The really unique thing about Napier is that he’s always unafraid to do the necessary, ugly football stuff that isn’t exciting, but this is a higher platform than he’s ever been on as a head coach.”

Florida does have some talented players across the board, but the Gators might need more for their ultimate vision under Napier.

“They’re going to need a deep group at running back, and they’re going to need a better, different level of play on the O-line for what they want to do,” an anonymous coach said.

Dan Mullen and his staff used to hit the right buttons, but 2021 exposed a lot of flaws in the program.

“On defense, it’s less about personnel and more about a culture change,” another anonymous coach said. “They never lacked for talented guys with Todd Grantham, it was just that the scheme ended up hurting them more than the execution.”

It also doesn’t help Florida, a program in the middle of a transition, plays in the rising SEC East dominated by defending national champion Georgia and quality programs such as Tennessee, Kentucky and South Carolina.

“No one thinks they’re going to suddenly right the ship and close that gap with Georgia,” a final anonymous coach said. “You should look for a more settled QB situation, better turnover ratio and winning ugly at first.”

Florida opens the 2022 season at home against defending Pac-12 champion Utah on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. ET.

That comment about the talent rankings in the east was dumb.

The rest of the comments were mostly spot on from what we know and have seen of Napier at UL.

I do think it's too soon to say what the offense will really look like here though. I think Napier will tailor his offense to his roster.

The other comment I disagreed with was about the run-first stuff. Urban ran a run-first offense that was successful and the fans embraced.

As much as I loved the 2020 offense, I wish they were able to run at all!

From screenshots of a Twitter Thread

No clue how true this all is, but it's interesting.

quote:

Dear Fans, 2021, According to DB Mordecai McDaniel

Many fans were chided last season for what was deemed conjecture regarding what went wrong at UF under Mullen in 2021. This author had the privilege of sitting down with a Gator who was there for it all, and when he asked Mordecai difficult questions, Mordecai did not hold back. It seems that this author, as well as many other fans, were more on-point than we may have thought we were about what was happening behind the scenes in Gainesville.

According to McDaniel, Emory Jones started over AR-15 because Mullen had pre-determined EJ after Trask - period. McDaniel said: “It was never about who was the better QB or athlete, many of us wanted 15 to play, but Mullen had already made up his mind before the season started!” This author wrote a piece last year titled: “Dan’s Problem is Dan” wherein he suggested Mullen’s stubbornness, not EJ’s merit, was the only reason he was starting over AR. Fact check, TRUE!?

Next, this author and other fans questioned Mullen’s integrity when he claimed AR-15 was still injured and couldn't play...despite doing backflips on the sideline pre-game! McDaniel laughed about this: “He wasn't hurt! Have you ever had an injured hamstring?? You can't walk upright let alone land backflips! Mullen was getting too much heat and needed an out!” Fact check, TRUE!?

New Info (not suggested by this writer):
According to McDaniel, Mullen began taking over the defense last season and it made things worse: “We would go into a game after having practiced a gameplan all week, then it would be game-time, and Mullen would throw out the entire plan and start calling plays! He (Mullen) and Coach Grantham were not getting along at practice or in the games - then we all started getting at each other too- it got bad, man!”

Positive Changes Under Napier:
Mordecai said that they all feel like the coaching staff actually cares about them now; he said the team has gotten close, way beyond what they used to be - which has had positive ramifications at practice: “Man, you should see us at practice ((laughs)), we got guys flying all over the place now!” McDaniel continued: “The coaches are all about mastering fundamentals - we asked them when we were going to get our plays, and they told us we will get them when we get our footwork right! It’s so different than before: they would just hand us the plays and tell us to learn them - now we are practicing fundamentals constantly and the coaches expect us to execute them to perfection; it’s all about discipline now. It’s real.”

Funny Incident at Practice:
McDaniel said: “Coach Napier told the team that our shirts couldn’t be baggy - and a lot of us didn’t listen - so after practice, we came off the field and the athletic trainers came out with scissors and gave us all halter tops ((laughs)), none of us have worn a baggy shirt since ((laughs))”

McDaniel can hardly wait for September and said that there is just a whole new sense of optimism and energy this year - but that they are all eager to see what happens under Napier. McDaniel said that the team came together after Napier was hired and collectively decided that they needed to get behind the new coaching staff - and that they would all fully buy-in and then assess things after the season.

I asked Mordecai if he was surprised that Mullen was fired: “Nah, he quit after UGA - he was done. When he called the team meeting to tell us he was let go, I didn’t even go cause I knew what he was gonna say - but those that went said he came in and said that he wished them well, and walked out - no conversation. We all saw what he got out of the deal ((shaking head)) - that was crazy, man.”

McDaniel’s candor was refreshing, and it was also nice to take a break from the gaslighting of many critical fans who thought that any conjecture was mere “armchair quarterbacks” spouting nonsense. Mordecai confirmed what many of us already knew: our eyes weren’t lying to us last season and they aren’t lying to us about the new culture that seems to be in place under Napier now! I asked McDaniel about Wilson’s infamous shoe-throw against LSU and what he thinks would happen if someone pulled that kind of stunt under Napier, his response is an appropriate closing for this piece: “Man, they would be running until they graduated!” Is it September yet??

Too bad it’s going to be wasted on a 6-6 season and him leaving for the draft at the end of the season.

We'll see.

I don't like how things have gone recently, but I'll wait until we actually get our asses kicked in a game before going all doom and gloom about this year and Napier.
