Noah Jefferson committed to Ole Miss. Likely a grade issue here. Seems like UF admissions only likes Sante Fe CC

What do you guys think of Mcdowell... I know he is just a 3 star but I think he has a lot of upside. Pretty athletic for a big guy and a two sport athlete in HS, wrestling as well.

We needed a center really, really bad. He's not great, but a year or two in the S&C program and he will be. He will be primarily a back up for the foreseeable future, but it's nice to actually HAVE a backup.

Muschamp wasn't fond of offensive linemen backups, apparently.

I'm not going to jump for joy over a player rated that low, but I understand getting him. Mullen knows him. Is comfortable offering him, and we have a lot of room in the class right now. So don't see why you don't think a guy you think could be a hidden gem. Next class I would be mad if we offered a kid that lowly ranked though.

Linebacker Andrew Chatfield’s mother discusses their official visit to Florida

January 31, 2018

Join us here on SEC Country for a daily recap of the latest Florida recruiting news, tales from the trail and perspective on what it all means for the Gators.

Florida impresses Andrew Chatfield

One of the nation’s top pass rushers made his way to Florida last weekend.

The Gators received the final official visit from 4-star defensive end/linebacker Andrew Chatfield, who attends American Heritage High School in Plantation, Fla.

Chatfield drove up to Gainesville with multiple family members, including his mother, Ketelie Chatfield. She discussed their trip with SEC Country.

“It was a great visit,” she said. “The environment at Florida was great. It’s a great place for a school. I just liked the people, the atmosphere and how well everybody gets along.”

Chatfield’s mother said she has been impressed with Florida coach Dan Mullen, who conducted an in-home visit on Jan. 18. Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham is recruiting the 6-foot-2, 221-pound defender to play outside linebacker in his 3-4 scheme.

“I like the new coaches,” Chatfield’s mother said. “From what I saw, they work well together. They have an agenda and they’re putting in a system to meet that agenda. I can see how determined Coach Mullen is to push the guys to do their best.”

That push from Mullen doesn’t only happen on the football field. For Chatfield’s mother, the highlight of the trip was learning about the academic resources at UF and how much that matters to Mullen.

“Coach Mullen really cares about education. As he says, football is easy,” Chatfield’s mother said. “So he has to concentrate on the players in the classroom and make sure they’re there to accomplish what they came to school for.

“He checks to see if they’re going to class and keeps them focused on their education as well as football. We liked the Otis Hawkins Center and the fact that they have a 20-to-1 teacher ratio. That was really impressive.”

In addition to Florida, Chatfield has officially visited to Florida State (Jan. 19), Miami (Jan. 12) and Oklahoma (Nov. 11). He plans to make his decision on National Signing Day.

“All the schools that we visited have been great,” Chatfield’s mother said. “It’s just a matter of where he feels the most comfortable. So we are praying for God to lead him with this decision to a place that he’ll be comfortable for the next phase of his life.”

Gators visit Jacob Copeland

Florida made another stop in Pensacola, Fla., for top target Jacob Copeland.

The 4-star wide receiver from Escambia High School had in-home visit Tuesday with quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson and wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales, his primary recruiter.

Mullen and four assistants met last Thursday with Copeland, who will officially visit Florida this weekend. He has previously taken Alabama (Jan. 26), Texas A&M (Jan. 19) and Tennessee (Dec. 15).

The Crimson Tide are considered the biggest threat to the in-state Gators. Copeland will be a signing day decision.

Some believe NPF is down to ND and Florida. Think that would mean good news for UF.

We also need to watch the Bama WR situation. They are trending for Waddle and Ross. I think Copeland would likely pick Florida either way, but I’d take him given to us based on numbers crunch at Bama as well. He’s 3rd priority at Bama and tops at Florida, he also fits Mullen’s system extremely well.

''Taven Bryan was a three star OT out of Wyoming, how'd he end up becoming a potential first round DT? Freak athleticism & hard work. We will see how things pan out but best of luck to McDowell as a Gator. Nothing is set in stone to who will become, his destiny is his own hands.''

Most classes are going to have a couple of those guys. Meyer usually had a player like that or two. The problem is when they are making up a good portion of the class, an issue we ran into under Mac.

Florida in position to close strong one week out from National Signing Day

Posted 2 hours ago
We are tackling the best recruiting question supplied by Florida fans each day. If you’d like to submit a question, tweet to Zach Abolverdi here. Check out our question of the day every Monday through Friday. Go here to see all of our previous answers.

National Signing Day is one week away and I expect the Gators to close the 2018 recruiting cycle on a high note. Florida could potentially land more than a half-dozen commitments and finish with a top-10 class.

Florida coach Dan Mullen and his staff have filled their needs at quarterback, running back, tight end and safety. The top remaining targets on the board are 5-star offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere and 4-star wide receiver Jacob Copeland, and the Gators are considered the team to beat for both.

North Carolina is the favorite for offensive linemen William Barnes and Ed Montilus, but the Apopka (Fla.) teammates are expected to give Florida their final official visit this weekend. At this time, I anticipate top-100 offensive tackle Richard Gouraige to stick with his commitment to the Gators.

The nation’s No. 1-ranked junior college defensive end, Dorian Gerald, plans to visit this weekend and UF has a strong shot with him. I expect Miami defensive tackle commit Nesta Silvera to remain with the Hurricanes. Florida is in contention for hybrid rush ends Andrew Chatfield, Caleb Johnson and Caleb Tannor.

I think it’s a toss-up between Florida and Miami for Chatfield, Johnson is likely UF’s to lose and Tanner appears Auburn bound. The Gators are in the driver’s seat for 4-star cornerback Noah Boykin following his de-commitment from Maryland last week.

If Mullen & Co. can land the majority of their remaining targets, particularly Copeland and Petit-Frere, it will be a strong finish and one of the better transition classes in school history

Stop with this. For every 3 star gem there are ten bust. You really got to stop this narrative.

Look at UF's draft picks the last 15 years. Almost every first round was a top 100 player.

Attitude matters. But a good attitude with five star talent is substantially more valuable in college. You can develop under looked players sure, but most end up third string and never doing a thing.

SO yes. As I said. I'd rather take my chances with four and five stars. Stats prove they are far more likely to be successful here.

IMO Zach is the best recruiting writer for UF right now and it is free info. He does a good job on the radio with Cordoso and now with Pat Dooley as well.

However, Ed Ashoff was better at the Gainesville Sun than Zach. Zach was a big time homer during his time at the Sun.

There's really no narrative that I'm trying to draw up. I'm just pointing out that just because he's a 3* and not highly ranked doesn't automatically make him a terrible player. A 3* who waits a year or two to get developed in S&C and get coached up absolutely can play like a 4* or 5* -- and if there is any guy who can see the potential and make them play to it it's Dan Mullen.

We've had a ton of 3* players who have gone *way* beyond playing like them, and I'm not saying: okay, take a whole team full of 3*s, but I'm trying to tell people don't automatically shite on a player right away.

Hearing Lamar won’t visit the girls school now. You hearing the same thing? Good news for the orange and blue?

I believe that multiple writers are reporting that. Also Mullen stopped by Armwood today and is going in home later. Coffee is for closers.

some 3 stars, 2 stars, 1 stars, no stars, walk ons turn out to be great Gators. Our history is loaded with them.

History also shows that 4 and 5 stars don't always prove to be worth the investment you put in them.

We can only judge them as their career progresses to determine their ultimate value to the program.

I know I would rather have a 3 star that is 100% committed than a 5 star that is 50% committed.

Taven Bryan was the example I used -- he was a 3* Offensive Lineman, and through hard work, dedication and a love for Gator nation (he was one of our staunchest banner wavers) he became a first round DL draft pick.

I'm not saying I wouldn't want 90% of our roster to be 4 and 5 stars, but people forget that those guys get hurt, and getting great players to wait two or three years to play is rare.

We have a 3* Center (a position that generally gets no love) but we already have a center for at least one year, probably two years.

A guy who logs in the hours, works hard and is dedicated to the program absolutely can outperform his star rating.
