Gators have busy, productive recruiting weekend on campus

Florida Gators football is the No. 1 topic in Good Morning, Gators every day — but we cover news, notes and analysis from across the Gators sports world. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Florida football, recruiting, basketball and more.

Florida lands commitment from 4-star WR Justin Watkins

If the pledge holds true, Florida addressed one of its primary areas of need over the weekend, drawing a commitment from 4-star wide receiver Justin Watkins.

Watkins is ranked the No. 21 wide receiver in the Class of 2018, according to the 247Sports composite.

Florida took on transfers Van Jefferson (Ole Miss) and Trevon Grimes (Ohio State) at the position earlier this offseason, though both are awaiting official NCAA clearance that they will indeed be available this year.

But even in his news conference to announce his early signing class, Gators coach Dan Mullen reiterated that receiver remained a position of need for his team. The Gators are still in the hunt for 4-star WR Jacob Copeland, among others.

For now, they look a little stronger with Watkins on board, but they aren’t done yet.

SEC Country’s Zach Abolverdi takes a closer look at the rest of Florida’s weekend visitors.

Cameron Williams, a 3-star defensive end from Hollywood, Fla., in the Class of 2019, announced his decision to flip his commitment from Florida to Miami over the weekend.

Florida enters the week atop the SEC standings at 14-5 overall and 6-1 in the conference. Auburn (17-2, 5-1) is the only other team with fewer than two losses in the league.
The Gators asserted their position as the team to beat in the SEC with their 66-64 win at No. 18 Kentucky on Saturday night. It was just Florida’s fourth win at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky., in the last 20 years.

John Dunmoore (4* WR 2019) decommitted, but for one: I had no idea who he was, and for two, we're bringing in an extremely loaded WR corps this year. I think this was probably pretty mutual.

Not mutual, but this staff is still trying to build relationships with 2019 kids.

I don't think it's too much of a coincidence that we took on Watkins and immediately this kid de-commits from the same position.

If he chose to go the ATH route, he's behind Watkins and Toney -- neither of which he's going to beat out at Slot-Receiver/APB.

If he chose to go the WR route, he's for sure behind: Grimes, Cleveland and Van Jefferson and probably behind Swain and Hammond -- it looks even more bleak if we land Copeland. (I don't think we do anymore.)

Not saying we don't want him, but I'm sure he wants a better opportunity to start -- and honestly his de-commitment was kind of weird.

''I hope you find it in your heart to understand that there are people who depend on me for their well-being'' is a pretty bizarre thing for a 17 - 18 year old kid to say for a de-commit.

Watkins was going to be a DB at first from what I've read. Plenty of time for 2019

I think that depends on whether or not we land another DB. He could be a CB, but I think there are too many actual, real DBs on the roster. I also read he's going to be a CB, but it's probably dependent on how these weeks go.

Hear we have good momentum from the DB committed to Maryland. Will see how that goes. Watkins could be really fun to watch on offense.

Yeah Scarlett, WR Rick Wells, and LBs Ventrell Miller and James Houston return back to the team tomorrow. Also Keivonnis Davis has not been cleared yet but should be before too long.

Thank fricking God we have two new linebackers to add to the roster, even if they're only bodies for depth.

Miller

Houston

Neither of them are incredible, obviously, but it's going to be nice to have them as back ups.

Wells

Would be surprised if he contributes at all this year.

Scarlett on the other hand, ho boy. According to ''sources'' (I know, I know), he's j-j-jacked. Apparently he was doing a different S&C program.

''The Gators are now up to 67% on 247 crystal balls to land 5* OT Nicholas Petit-Frere.''

''4*DB Noah Boykin is now 93% on 247 to Florida.''

Noah is basically a lock. The predictors who have him here now are the guys who wait till the last minute when it's all but a sure thing to keep their stats above 85 percent.

Really big get unless something shocking happens.

Probably because homeboi had to say he’s a lock. I feel like every time he says someone is a lock it’s the opposite.
