The issue I have is that McElwain does not appear to take our lesser opponents very seriously.
In 2015 - the team came out hungry to prove something. They came out, with an obvious QB competition, but everyone had known about it for a couple of weeks, and everyone was playing for a starting position.
Then Mac comes out and hums and haws about the QB's and seems to switch them at random in the ECU game. That caused huge problems for the offense that night and honestly, UF was lucky to win. The defense really bailed them out with a pick 6 and a big stop at the end of the game.
Vanderbilt that same year, plays mind games with the kickers in the 1st quarter, figuring he can afford to do that against a shitty vandy team. Then at the end of the half, only up 6, he puts in his second team defense in to run out the half and rest his starters and Vandy promptly scores - and it almost cost him the game. Then he LUCKED out putting the same kicker he had played mind games with in to win the game, and the guy miraculously delivers.
FAU - the team showed up believing it was a tune up before FSU because Mac had basically said it all week.
Come in to 2016 - Mac admits he is going to test run 5 RBs. He puts 4 in the game in the first series, which is (im sorry) fricking ridiculous, one of them promptly kills a drive with a fumble, and UF is never in synch again until things get dicey in the 2nd half.
He has absolutely got to stop pulling this mickey mouse crap against mid level teams - because the gators obviously don't respond well to it.
Hopefully UF doesn't frick around against UK, and he has settled on a RB and a set rotation on the OL and at WR.
So yes, I blame McElwain for the shittiness of the opener. But it doesn't mean I'm off the bandwagon. I was never really on it in the first place, I am still in wait and see mode. He is 11-4 now, but he has a lot more to prove IMO.

I agree a bit. I did wonder at times if Mac wasn't screwing around with this and that because he felt confident that he would ultimately get the W.
I also was working as an assistant photog on the field when we played Georgia Southern a few years back. Suffice to say, I'd prefer playing like everyone we face is No. 1.

Holy geez almighty....Mac takes lesser opponents seriously?
I guess a Hall of Fame coach took lesser opponents lightly too?
1990 we beat lesser Furman 27-3
1991 Syracuse beat us badly 21-38
1991 we beat a lesser UK team to win the SEC 35-26 which was in doubt til late and theres more including close calls to Vandy.
We have had many struggles with openers before...players are no different than fans and get overconfident..its just human nature.
OL? pleaseeee...have you watched college football lately? Almost every team is having issues with their OL. Defense is ahead of offenses in this day and age and thats why Bama wins...you just need enough offense to help keep the defense off the field to keep them fresh. If we win 11 games by 3 points each who cares?
I will add that putrid offenses undermine stout defenses in the long run. Our offense wont be putrid this year imo. Fans bellyache because they wanna see bombs away and that doesnt win games unless your defense can stay off the field.
I honestly think Mac dumbed down the offense knowing full well that UMass couldnt score enough. We didnt throw to TEs or use much misdirection last night. Expect to see the offense open up some more and for us to run a little more exotic draw/run schemes with passes to TEs and RBs on the menu.
1-0 and ten wins away from nirvana.

What I saw last night was basically the beginning of last season. Hope. Instead of Grier, the guy's name is Del Rio. Remember how much better the team got game after game up until Grier got busted? Hopefully the same applies here minus the PEDs part.

I hope you're right. Really. Please. Would be tasty crow I would happily eat.

You're on crack. Yes, some teams like Texas have OL issues but they just put 500 yards and 50 on ND with 1st year OL/OC coaches with a freshman QB. Show which teams have OL issues beside us. UTK is one. You're cherry picking games from 25 years ago? Seriously, that is ancient in football times. SDSU dropped 41 on TCU, Texas and Wisconsin beat ND/LSU with an OL full of Freshman and Sophomores, USM blew out UK with lesser players after losing 35-10, Clemson and Bama had freshman on the OL and Bama was playing a True freshman QB and won. We won 12 games in 2012 with your win by 3 BS talking and it was a miserable thing to watch. You're insane if you don't think big plays when games. Are you still reading Muschamps guide to the ground and pound? We've struggled in 5 years since 95 to beat bad teams in the opener: 1997, 2005, 2012, 2013, and 2016. I can see where Mac doesn't take lesser teams seriously and the proof is in the pudding. Bamas offense had 477 yds of offense and 2 long TDs over 30 yards to help them get to 24-3. None of your claims hold any merit. Stop making excuses for bad coaching.

TJ why dont you choose another team that suits your needs and wants??? Houston would be a wise choice....but Im sure you would find fault with them soon enough and claim that their coach sucks.
Maybe you should try some crack TJ....inner city stuff that can satisfy your cravings. It helps me through the day until I can snort pot....but I get a lot of nose bleeds.
I guess you are right...lets fire Mac and hire the flavor of the month...pass the hat for donations to buy out Mac ... you got an extra 10 million? Oh well...so much for that idea. We just plain suck and theres no hope....life is plain hell aint it? Try to have a great day and hope Ole Miss beats the girls school tonight...hug someone close to you.

I'm sorry I'd like to see coaches paid millions put on an adequate show. Football is entertainment and I'm sick of excuses when multiple teams can put freshman at QB, RB, OL and not skip a beat and we struggle to beat shitty teams. How about we hire coaches who know how to fricking coach and recruit instead of the cheap coaches. There is no excuse. None.

I will say this. We better have a great team next year, cause if we play in our opener next year like we did the past 3 years, we're going to get obliterated by Michigan in Dallas. Fact. People crack jokes that we don't leave the state of Florida for OOC games, and when we finally do, we're going to get embarrassed.

yeah - its a scary thought but a lot can change in a year.
To be fair - comparing UF to Texas last night - Texas had some really great skill talent on display. That RB especially was really good.
Even they had OL issues though - god, how many bad snaps did they have?
Notre Dame had a really really really bad day on defense.
And say what you want, that guy Swope at the end made huge plays running the wildcat.
Texas ended up scoring 50 because they had too though. Their defense was really bad in the 2nd half.

LDR is a RS So.
RB has 2 sophs and a jr
OL has 3 sophs and 2 Jrs starting. Now the defense is understandably young with freshman but Mac being touted as a guru and then we have 197 yds of offense and 10 points going into the 4th against the worst fbs team last yr. Nuss has to go along with Summers if Mac wants to survive past next year. We need Mac to be successful here. This team looks nothing like his csu teams at all.

ATL is right. The offense just seemed disjointed. Playcalling, OL missing assignments, the RB rotation on the FIRST DRIVE (4 of them, wtf?), the dropped passes, etc...

But UMAss is literally the WORST FBS team in the country. The WORST.
It's a little early to be calling them the worst, they might surprise people later on in the season but:
Rain favors weaker teams. It eliminates the speed of the opposition and turns it into a more strategic game, which will limit the disparity regarding the score.
This offense is almost completely new: New quarterback, new running back, new receivers, maybe we had some veterans on the Offensive Line but they're still underclassmen.
It might take more than a year to be back: We're now seeing just what Mac was left with, but he won the East his first year with a redshirt freshman, a moderate running back, no receivers, no offensive line and without a goddamn kicker.
Considering the pieces he didn't have, we're okay.
Because I remember a coach who lost to an FCS. :)

In all fairness Straw last year we had one of the best defenses in the country which had an anchor tied to its azz with inept offense.
TJ conveniently overlooks the fact Mac went into Fast Eddies house and smoozed the parents or otherwise he would be in Crimson right now. No mention of bright spots by TJ only negative shite slinging.
I have been through the 60s, the 70s and the 80s and while at times it was heartbreaking...I was still a 100% Gator. Young fans today are fickle, bandwagon shits and thats why Spurrier left...he spoiled the fans who expected perfection every year and called for the asst coaches head after an L. He got tired of it. Some you just cant please....win by 30...should've won by 40 and win by 40...shouldve hung 50....etc etc
Go back to 2009 when Tebow had to carry the team on his wide shoulders and we went undefeated until SECCG and a lot of folks bitched and moaned cause we werent blowing teams away....what??? Couldnt enjoy the season?
Will TJ come out of the woodwork if we slam UK? Doubtful that he will praise anything but find fault with something....its ok TJ...I still care about you....Im just smiling

I don't think we'll lose to UK, but I don't think we will blow them out by any means.
UK has played us tough for the last 2 years.
