Thoughts after the ECU game?

Thought the defense played better, obviously a drop-off in talent from A&M to ECU. But we were able to at least provide a little bit of pressure & got 2 turnovers on the night. Although, both in my opinion were gifts.
Thought the tackling overall was much better than last week, especially tackling in space.
It was finally good to see MD28 fully healthy, he's going to be very crucial part of why the offense will be successful.
Thompson was okay, settled in and I liked all the easy throws Spurriers set him up with and I wish we would do it more often in the beginning of games so that he calms down and gets in a groove.
Saw this interesting little nugget tonight:
By no means do I think we'll beat UGA this week, but I think the teams moving in the right direction. Especially after last weeks performance.

The Carolina pass rush was better on Saturday even though no sacks were recorded. The defense, however, totaled seven quarterback hurries. That was the most for a USC defense since posting 10 against Georgia in 2012.

Scoring on our last 7 drives was encouraging, though it ended up in a lot of FGs.
Hopefully Mike Davis will return to full form, looked good.
Thompson is still inconsistent but wasn't bad, a couple of easy drops by the WRs messed with his stats a bit.
Defense did look better but it was also against a much less talented team. It looked like A&M part 2 those first couple of drives but they did pretty well after that. Still can't defend the slant.

I am on the phone, so I am going to type some grammatical or spelling errors.
overall, the team played much better than the previous week and there was noticeable improvement everywhere.. Tower defense was better, but still nowhere near that it has been in the past 10 years. the guys we had in there in the second half seems to be better than the guys we had in the first half.
we did get some pressure on the QB, but that might be because the ECU o-line isn't that great.
there were about 5 or 6 drops by the wide receivers and Rory. Dylan through some good balls. we are doing a really good job of spreading around the ball to the different receivers.
the o-line was dominant, but again the ECU D line was not that great.
the run game was decent, but we still should have put up even more yards on them.
the biggest turnaround was in special teams from last season to this season, coach Robinson has made some really good games in all aspects of that squad. Sean Carson has the ability to take it from end zone to end zone, if we can just keep some blocks and make some lanes.

There’s a scene in the movie Shakespeare in Love where Geoff Rush’s character, the theater owner in the midst of utter chaos and unavoidable disaster, assures his benefactors, “Surprisingly enough, it all turns out well.”
Since the evidence would seem to suggest a happy ending is about as likely as Gwyneth Paltrow passing as a man, they are skeptical and want to know how it could possibly turn out well.
He shrugs. “It’s a mystery.”
This is now my Gamecock mantra for the season.
When you see this pic, you will know what it means.

Was at the game of course. Very frustrating.
Have watched it twice today ... still very frustrating.
Something is wrong.
They're thinking too much.

Thompson also brings a lot of this on himself, there were many many wide open underneath throws or a streaking RB on a wheel route, only to watch DT throw down field into double or triple coverage.
Getting him to calm down and take what the defense gives him is the key to the season, his need to throw the homerun ball every time he drops back is frustrating to say the least, especially when you see the ball pass over 2-3 open guys.

played better but your middle remains wide open.
I will say ECU probably has a tempo much faster than A&M's...It's probably on the speed of Oregon.
I think these first two games won't even be remotely similar to what you will see with Georgia.
So, anything can and probably will happen.
Good luck!

USC's 2 FG in the second half both came after a 1st&10 at EC15 and EC11, respectively. the 4Q FG after the long drive saw a delay of game penalty on first down at the EC11. 8 points left off the board. touchdowns are a must in those situations.
also, settling for a FG after blocking the ECU attempt was deflating. USC took possession at the EC46 and in 2 plays had 1st&10 at EC24. 3 straight incompletions and thus a 42 fg from Fry.
a 41-23 final (could have been 45-23) paints a different picture to the idiot voters who moved Carolina down 3 spots in the AP T25 after winning.
was sitting in the West Upper and still saw confusion early on in alignment and substitutions. Ward seems hell bent on this 3/4 with 2 deep safeties. ECU was 6 of 12 on 3rd down, just 2 of 4 in the 2nd half. USC held the ball for 20 of 30 minutes after halftime.
Holloman led Carolina in solo tackles with 6 and no assists. Moore had 7 total with 4 solo. Walton 2, BAW 1, Lewis 1 assisted. ECU had 21 rushes and a 6.3 ypc.
the LBs are still challenged in their drops into passing lanes in front of the safeties - the middle remains open. Carden had 32 completions and a 10.03 avg per completion. LBs did tackle better than in the opener.
Surratt had 3 of the DT's 8 tackles in the game. Dukes had 2 and the only TFL from the front 7 on the night.
DE's are what they are. David Johnson was active and tried to create havoc. English had 2 tackles though was largely kept at bay. the 7 qb pressures that are being talked about did result in 1 INT.
DBs - still not liking the cushion still given to the outside WRs. it's not going to change, however. Brison Williams played well. Gurley too. McWilliams had 5 tackles and 1 TFL on a nice move to bust up a WR screen for a loss. there are still coverage deficiencies that may only get better as the season goes.
Dixon Jr's blocked field goal along with Gurley's and Golightly's two picks were a welcome sign of much needed individual play making.
Dylan completed 15 of 18 in 2nd half with 1 touchdown. 7 of 7 and the touchdown to Brent on USC's first possession of 2nd half. the vertical passing game seemed to be shelved in lieu of the quick outs and excellent blocking by WRs. it took the decision making out of the play and helped DT find a groove.
Davis/Wilds/Williams will hopefully build on a solid game.
OL finally played as a unit in the 2nd half. hopefully that rhythm they established late vs ECU will carry over from here on out.
my apologies for the long post...
big opportunity come this Saturday at Williams-Brice. Be Loud.

You know ... that's a good point.
I thought it was just me and then I thought, well, there must be a good reason for it but damn.
Calling a timeout after a timeout? Hell no. That's a no-no.
Then later on calling another timeout after an injury timeout ... hell fricking no. That's a no-no.
Those were not good signs to me and it disappoints me that Thompson did it both times.
Then he's rolling-out to his right and there is nothing but open field in front of him for thirty years and he tries to throw into coverage 22 yards down-field trying to pickup a 3rd and 11?
This is what worries me. ^^^
If Dylan Thompson ran a race against a pregnant woman ... he'd come-in third.

He has the ability to run too, thats what I don't get. That need to throw the homerun ball kills me, we have been spoiled by Shaw no doubt. I know I have had my moments of yelling at the screen to throw it instead of running it, but Shaw would put the game on his shoulders and run instead of chancing a bad 35 yard throw. He is gone and I firmly believe when we lose to uga, we will start seeing Mitch come in and get reps the rest of the season.

I kinda think the need to defend against the homerun ball plays in USC's favor. Because there is film showing that Thompson can absolutely hit those deep routes, UGA is going to do everything in their power to make sure that the safeties keep the receivers in front of them, thereby playing deeper than they likely would have when Shaw was here.
I think this has kinda been what Spurrier has been attempting this season - use the pass to establish the run. In both games, the first several plays have been passes, which I believe is to A) establish confidence for Thompson, and B) to get the defense to play deeper, therefore allowing the running game to go ham. Of course, Thompson is the missing piece in all of this. If he plays to his full potential, the Carolina offense can absolutely give UGA fits. If he struggles with nerves like he did against aTm or the first few ECU series, then all bets are off.
I really do believe that we'll see the best this team has to offer this weekend. I'm not necessarily saying that Carolina will win, but I think this game is in doubt deep into the fourth quarter.
