I'm going to go ahead and predict that Eliott has the interim tag removed and promoted to head coach the week of the Clemson game.
I don't think Herman is leaving after a year at Houston, I don't think Fuente is seriously considering USC, and I'm not sure Smart isn't going to bide his time until Richt is officially out.
My bet is that it'll be spun how the best man for the job is on staff already, has the respect of the players and coaches in state, and is a rising star, etc. Half the staff will turn over, and that'll be that. I just don't think an outside candidate is going to take this job. Just a hunch that I have.

All I'm going to say is that I really hope not. I like Elliot but I'm just not sure he's ready for the SEC stage on a day in, day out 24/7/365 basis as a HC.
I'll continue to love and support my alma mater and that will never change, no matter what, ever. Gamecock loud and Gamecock proud from the day I was born until the day I'm returned to the Earth. (and I'd like to think I'll still be all about the Garnet and Black even after I'm dead and gone)

I am not sure about Slats as a good source. He is taking another job outside of sports reporting. Nothing to loose, go out with a bang. He is a very good reporter and I watch him alot, I just don't think he would have inside info.
There's a savannah local radio show this afternoon, I will see if they mention it

Sounds good!! I'm not hanging my hopes on any of the (multiple) tweets that were all vowing Herman was coming here....but I sure wouldn't mind if they all did have it right this time around.

Interesting. Not seeing this kind of chatter from anyone else with even a slight connection to SC or Houston, not that I'd be surprised if we end up extending an offer.
Makes me wonder how someone like him could have a source for that kind of info that no one else would have.

There were several others saying the same thing today. Tim Frisby was actually one of them. A couple of others sounding off that they could "verify" that what Slats said was, indeed, legit.
So many ppl saying this and that....outside of us SC folk I don't recall ever seeing this much outside speculation and interest in who we hire.
The most legit and credible source so far has been Frisby, though, in my opinion. This is what he said when I tweeted Slats asking for his source and if it was a legit one or just rumors...Slats replied saying legit source and then Frisby tweeted me this:
Then Frisby went on to say that it was almost certain that Texas was keeping Strong for at least another year, possibly two even if next yr is a repeat of this one.

@Ken_Slats @GamecockAngelia Legit. My source says Herman being advised to see how Texas situation may pan out before finalizing deal.

Would Herman bring his Houston staff with him?
Posted on 11/13/15 at 8:41 am to JimMorrison
IDK but I hope he'd bring that 4* and that 5* that just committed to Houston with him.
And totally off the subject...but we're doing a black out against Florida?
For the love of God...the last black out we did against Florida ended in a humiliating disaster. I didn't think we'd ever do that again!!! Hope lightening doesn't strike twice in that regard.

I would imagine we're just wearing black uniforms because we won against Vandy in them.
Just my guess. Or is there an official blackout?
Seems dumb for a noon game, but at least it isn't September or October.

Fuente has cold-shouldered us but we need not take it personally because he has cold-shouldered everyone.
Some speculation that there may be a vetting issue he is hiding for some reason which may anchor him at Memphis for awhile. I had to laugh when I was hearing the story because it sounded like - well, rather I asked while laughing, "so what you are basically telling me is that he has doing something at Memphis that is going to cause him to want to stay there rather than move up? So Memphis is extorting him to stay? Well that should work out real well for the both of them."
None of that makes any sense to me so we're probably better off walking away from Fuente. If he is that much of an enigma then we don't need that kind of diva around here.
So back to Herman.
Looks like Herman. Smells like Herman. Tastes like Herman. His buyout is amortarized, the remaining four years, so it's not like it'll be $10 or even $8 million or anything. It's probably going to be more around the high $3s which is doable.
Houston is well aware he is looking and they are going to go at him with a counter offer whenever the final numbers start coming-in for him. Houston has big wealthy boosters and they want to keep him. We're not going to get him for cheap - if he goes undefeated especially.
All the info, all the contacts and sources are slowing waaaaay down as Tanner turtles-up and the search committee members are becoming increasingly vague and even deceptive, perhaps. I guess that means something is in the works, we're really close.
I must have heard, "Coach Spurrier really did us a favor, what he did, bowing-out early," ... I must have heard that a half dozen times.
Under Armour paid us what they owed us but they are trying to renegotiate a new contract sans Coach Spurrier ... we're waiting until we get the new coach signed. Chances are, as I've said before, Nike is going to make a run at us - as will Champion, Adidas and maybe Russell might try to get us back. We're a much hotter commodity than we used to be ... plus, now, we've got Dawn Staley. So I think it is going to be Nike sooner or later.
Everyone knows why this is so important right? For recruiting. Nike is a legit recruiting tool. Under Armour was, when they were running the great "Protect This House!" commercials, but they have had some issues with quality and they are waaaaaay too involved in the Maryland search.

.... continued from above:
Lastly, and I include this with some reservation with regard to Shawn ... he's a really super guy, a good man, very energetic and personable. But it's not going to matter, these last three games. I mean, who knows, maybe if he beats both Florida and Clemson, two Top Ten teams and then is willing to fire practically the entire defensive staff provided he could place better hires in the positions.
I know we all love and respect Shawn, we've become attached to him and maybe G.A. as well - but it's time for new blood. If he finishes well then he can use this for a springboard to a head coaching job somewhere at the end of the season. Plenty of them are going to be open - he'll get a chance somewhere to build his resume, build his network of contacts, expand his horizons, show what he can really do at a place without as much pressure to win immediately and against a little bit softer competition. He's going to get great references. There are going to be a lot of openings this year - maybe as many as 30. He'll get a shot somewhere else and who knows, five or ten years from now he'll be the hot coach and he might end-up back here. But I seriously doubt, from what I am hearing, I seriously doubt he'll be retained. Just sayin'. Things are not as rosy and upbeat as it appears from the outside. Some coaches have to go, some players have to go. There is still some dissension in the locker room in places that cannot be fixed without a new blood transfusion. That's not uncommon - and it nothing personal against Shawn. He's just gotta refine his style a little bit. Less of a rah rah screaming and hollering cheerleader type and more of an enthusiastic motivational leader type who completely understands the in-game strategies.
So let's look at it this way and see if I can do a better job of explaining that.
Let's say Shawn pulls-off a miracle this season with what he has and beats both Florida and Clemson. The odds against that happening are astronomical ... but stranger things have happened. So he beats two Top Ten teams at home and makes a bottom tier bowl. Then what?
Well, we could get him cheap. Really cheap. So that would leave room within the budget, and Tanner is very very budget oriented, to sign some really big name coordinators and pay them a lot of money. So let's say we do that - no idea who the coordinators would be but let's say we do that ...
1 - Recruiting will suffer because there are no marquee, high profile, names on the staff and they've already been told to slow down on offering schollies and taking commits unless they are very solid, highly regarded prospects. This last commit they took ... bad move. Bad decision. They never should have offered, they should have waited ... now we're obligated. It was noted in a negative fashion.
2 - We all know there are problems on the staff. Certain coaches have absolutely got to go and everyone knows it. Basically the entire defensive staff - but it may not end there. Could be one or two on the offensive side of the ball as well. That's EVEN IF Shawn is retained. The far better, far easier solution is to bring in a new guy with a new staff. That'll solve the problem in one stroke.
3 - Which brings-up the next point and things will start to make sense here. We're after a big name offensive-minded coach. There is no bigger name offensive-minded coach in American right now than Herman - unless it was Fuente but he weirded-out so it's Herman. Shawn is not a play-caller. He doesn't have a QB background. We cannot recruit the big time WRs and QBs we're going to have to have. Herman can, and will.
4 - Segue to the players. There are some players that have got to go. One or two are done, it's over for them whether they know it or not ... they need to start looking for a place to transfer. They've been problem children since they got here and they gotta go. A few others are simply not SEC material. And then there are the recruits out there watching, waiting to see what we are going to do. Plus, by the time the decision is made the new staff is going to have to hit the ground running ... thanks to Spurrier bowing-out early and thanks to us being ready to name the new hire early - the new staff will have time to recruit. That's very important.
5 - I keep hearing this, "Let Shawn stay and be our Dabo type coach. Highly emotional, a lot of enthusiasm for the program, this is his dream job, yada yada." But Dabo and Clemson are playing by a different set of rules right now and it is going to catch-up to them ... on several levels. Plus Dabo has never had to compete in the SEC where you cannot name one rah rah cheerleader type coach. These coaches in the SEC are serious - they would eat up Dabo and spit him out in short order during the course of the season. For us the only option is to bring in a professional, with a solid background, a strong resume, and one who is capable of organizing and assembling a great staff around him - capable of bringing-in coaches with him, new faces with new ideas and fresh minds. A new day, a new start.
So it's not going to be Shawn IMHO, unless we are left with no better options and if we find ourselves in that position then we are screwed quite honestly. Ray will be in trouble and he knows it. This has got to be his legacy hire. Everything is riding on this. This is not a game, this is big business and who here, honestly, would want to bet everything on Shawn right now? I know I wouldn't. It's not the smart move.
Anyways, that's what I know. Everyone is really playing it tight to the vest right now over there so I take it that whatever is happening is getting closer to happening. We're in final approach getting ready to land this thing for better or worse. All the timelines, all the cut-off dates are still in effect. Ideally we want to announce this thing on the 5th ... but the deadline is the 10th. If it goes any later than that then we better hold on and keep our fingers crossed for the best.

It seems that all talk concerning Smart has ended. Have we just gone all in on Herman at this point? I'm fine with that, if so -- just worries me that we're focusing so much on the hottest commodity in the country whose team could cause major disruption by the end of the season. He seems like the type to wait for the best offer possible, and I'm unsure how we'd rank on that list come season's end with all of the jobs opening up.
I guess I just want to know what our contingency plan would be in the event of Herman rejecting us that isn't Shawn Elliot. Seems more and more likely Fuente isn't an option for us.
