We've been talking about the possibility of Will Muschamp coming to SC, in a couple different threads, as an Asst HC and/or DC (really whatever position gets him here to be in charge of our defense.)

I thought I would just make one thread for the discussion and updates.

Here's where we are:

Muschamp is no longer with UF, he has a $6M/3Yr buyout with UF, and he can't personally recruit anyone UF has offered for 1 year as of Saturday. This is why they made burner phones though, haha, j/k, but not really.

Muschamp is currently on vacation in the Caribbean with his family, he's not taking interviews, but his agent, Jimmy Sexton.

Jimmy Sexton is also Spurrier's agent.

Muschamp is one of the lead candidates for the currently vacant DC jobs at auburn and aTm. Muschamp is also rumored to be a choice for SC to lead their defense going forward, however, at this time, no defensive coaches from SC have been let go.

Muschamp used to coach at auburn from 06-07.

Muschamp does not like hurry up offenses.

Auburn feels like they have the best shot of landing him. Their insiders are saying that a deal is close.
aTm offered him $1.5M. It is rumored SC said they could match that. Reports from Auburn this morning on 247 suggest that they may offer over $2M.
Those sources on all sides of the various involved teams agree that Muschamp's next move isn't solely going to be about money. He already will make $6M over the next 3 years from the buyout. He's going to take a job somewhere to put himself in a position to be a HC again.

Muschamp was rumored to be nervous about Spurrier's tenure at SC and that was off putting about taking a job here. Yesterday, Spurrier said he'll be here 2-3 more years, which would be right on point for the time frame Muschamp would like to be a HC again.

It is unknown if SC would give Muschamp a HC in Waiting tag, but I don't think we'll do that.

We'll see what happens. I like SC's chances, we have the cash and the arse Kicking AD to get this done. We should all know within 3 weeks, if not much sooner. Definitely before Christmas or JUCO signing day.

247 updated that an official offer hasn't been made from SC to Muschamp, but that those type aren't made until there's indication from both sides that it will be accepted. Muschamp may be waiting to see what other HC jobs open up and or NFL jobs open up as well.

aTm has an offer of $1.5M out there for Muschamp.
The offer from auburn was just posted on their rivals site, it's $1.2M

quote:

Auburn apparently is prepared to spend at least $1.2 million per year for Muschamp's services, though it's unclear how comfortably the athletic department can foot the bill.

Johnson is owed slightly more than $2 million on his guaranteed deal while attrition affecting current assistants could add another $1 million to the dismissal bill. The department also will be paying ousted basketball coach Tony Barbee a total of $2.4 million during the next three years while also paying new coach Bruce Pearl $15 million during the next six years.

Those expenses come on the heels of a multimillion-dollar investment into technical upgrades related to the SEC Network roll-out. The network will generate additional revenue for all schools in time, but schools won't begin enjoying that windfall until 2016 at the earliest.

So this offer, if they are right, is lower than both aTm's and SC's. It was reported that Tanner will match or beat aTm's offer.

Phil Kornblut is reporting that Spurrier and Muschamp talked twice on Tuesday....Could've been just about golf, but it's prolly bout the job.

We're told Spurrier talked twice with Muschamp Tuesday. Muschamp, along with DC opportunities, is waiting to see what other HC opportunities

Day 5- Couple auburn sources on 247 are saying that Boom is going to auburn. Also, an analyst for Fox Sports says the same thing. Take it with a grain of salt though, b/c if the deal was done, it would be announced officially.

Day 6 - Day 5 seemed like SC was falling way behind Auburn. However, some people who claim to be in the know for SC stated that a verbal deal has been reached in some fashion. Some claimed it was with Muschamp, some claimed it even went as far to say that Muschamp will also be named HCIW. Some said that a deal was made, but they didn't say who with or how much. SC's officials are being very quiet right now, and not responding this evening to insiders. Earlier today, Ray Tanner talked with 247 and said that he wasn't a fan of the HCIW tag, but he would consider it if that's what it took to get the deal done.

An auburn insider cautioned that he still thinks Muschamp is going to auburn and that there will be a lot of crazy theories out there over the next few days. We'll see what happens. However, at least 1 of these SC sources is the type of guy who mainly just posts the big news and goes to players we sign announcements. Could be legit, could be BS, nobody will know anything until pen hits paper and the plane lands with Muschamp on it.

quote:

Sources confirm Muschamp is coming to South Carolina and will be bringing some of his defensive coaches from Florida.

Sources have confirmed that Will Muschamp will be South Carolina's new Defensive Coordinator. Sealing the deal is the opportunity to be South Carolina's Head Coach when Spurrier retires. Muschamp plans to bring several of his defensive coaches from Florida.
Muschamp's estimated salary will be $1.6 - $1.9 million.
Muschamp chose SC over Auburn.
So far, sources indicate Grady Brown (secondary coach) and Kirk Botkin (linebacker coach) will be leaving. More information to be released as received. USC President Harris Pastides gave the green-light to pursue Muschamp and get the deal done!

Day 8 - While some of these sources saying Boom to SC said that it will happen today or no later than Wednesday, Spurrier came out and said yesterday that no decisions will be announced this week.

Day 9 - Still no real news. Some of our offensive coaches were out there visiting defensive recruits. I thought that was interesting, but that could've just been a territory/convenience type of thing. Although, Bubba went with Ward to visit Arden Key and he's going to visit M Lewis tomorrow. Rumblings are out there that Lawing is coming back to Columbia, and that might not even be attached to the Muschamp decision, could just be BS, I think florida is going try to keep him. Trav Robinson is being looked at for the DC job at usf as well. JC at 247 said that Ward is not opposed to working under a HCIW in charge of defense.

Also, Pelini and Manny Diaz have expressed interest in our non-open DC job. Neither would get HCIW though.

Day 10 - Really long update from the SC "insider" who broke the "Done Deal" post last week. I put it on the last page of this thread. Cliff notes are that he's really confident that Muschamp is coming to SC still. Boom's wife is hot. He lists a bunch of reasons.

247 staff are saying auburn may want to make a decision this week to get a coach lined up for bowl prep.

Day 11 - Tons of shite going around about Boom buying a house in Columbia.

Day 12 - No announcements today.

Wont happen. Head coach in waiting fad went the way of the dodo after the NCAA changed recruiting rules to place the same restrictions of head coaches on the head coach in waiting

He'll probably get the assistant head coach title though

IMO this is between us and Auburn. aTm a distant 3rd

ATM still thinks no one can touch their $$$. My grandfather used to say "only a truly stupid man overestimates himself while underestimating his opponent".

We have offered Muschamp roughly 1.5 mil and some sort of incentives based on performance to be first in line as head coach when Spurrier retires in 2-3 years

JJim McElwain is going to be the HC at uf, and he's going to keep as the defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin and defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson. No word on Lawing...which means to me that Lawing is coming home to SC with Muschamp!!!

I know some don't like Lawing, but I would dance in my office, if that happened.

I'd be happy.

Kick Adams and Botkin to the curb, add Boom and Lawing, let Ward coach the LBs

Jesus we got to put the Lawing baby to bed. Lawing was having a real good time all over Cola behind his wives back. Spurrier encouraged him to leave and the wife agreed to keep it all hush hush if he just got out of Dodge. I guess she didn't want to see the program in that spotlight because of what HE did.

OBC has never liked that kind of person around regardless of how they coach. I don't see him changing that.

He won't be HCIW but I bet he'll be assistant head coach like Ellis Johnson was.

Only way I don't see him coming is if he gets an HC offer

I hope you're right. It all seems to be pointing our way

I hope we all aren't being led on by everything, because I really think we need to hire him in order to obtain any kind of success before HBC hangs it up.

eta: We need a flight tracker from Gainesville to Cola

My fingers are crossed .... but I'll be shocked if we sign boom. And remember .... the whole $1.2 million thing first broke from me, right here, before anywhere else. Every detail I posted has been rehashed and reposted everywhere else ... but I posted it here first.

Not saying there is no way ... am saying, if it happens then we really have reached the big time.

We've got six boosters willing to make-up the difference.

Dunno how reliable this is, but it was just posted on the Coaching Changes board

@BruceFeldmanCFB: Will Muschamp deal to #Auburn getting closer but still some staffing issue needs to be smoothed out, per source.

That doesn't sound good, but how would Feldman know more than anyobdy else?. This morning the auburn insiders on 247 claimed that it was basically a done deal, but that it might take time. To me, they could be just trying to control the narrative on this, but who knows.

The way the Aub's are acting over this is reminding me back when it was between us for Marcus Lattimore. They felt like they had him then come signing day, our hat is what he put on

Not saying Boom will not go to Auburn, they just have a recent history of leading themselves on.

Exactly, up until that Bruce Feldman tweet, we were gaining some momentum. Now it's shifted, but nobody will no shite, until he actually announces or signs.
