But what were the big boosters saying / what were they paying for
Other than recruits

A) schools are corporations now, and like established ones, they are dominated by transient management wishing feudal kingdom power while they have the job. They have no skin in the game and as such do not often establish long term goals beyond the powers of their limited kingdoms. You can whisper in an AD's ear with no money or a lot of money as long as they deem it a way to enhance their wealth or power.
B) Sometimes telling a big donor to "piss off" is like a high roller getting off on being told of by a dominatrix. Human psychology is what it is.

I will admit I hated it more when Ward was DC

I talked to Ward a few times and he was nothing but a goofball. Watching him coach at practice ( if talking smack to the players the whole time is considered coaching) made me understand why he sucked.

I know we aren't hunting a coach this week, but I we need a new coach I'd love to see us back up a BRINKS to Stanford's David Shaw. aA coach who has proven he can croot and beat the big boys.

I don't. Nothing against the guy, but he is married to that pro-set/power run offense.
Not only do you need a guys at qb who are consistently drafted by the pros (whether they stick or not), you also need to recruit offensive linemen that are frankly better than we are capable of recruiting.
That offense works at Stanford. Works at Wisconsin (though they really don't emphasize the pass). But in the end it is almost a rare year when they don't send one or two OL to the pros.
There are quality offensive linemen in our recruiting footprint, but it is awful hard to beat out the home schools in neighboring states for them. Lot easier to pull a WR or DB.
And I'd say quality OL (along with true Nose Guards) are what our state produces the fewest of in any given year.
Whatever coach eventually replaces Muschamp, has to run a system where you don't have to have an offensive line that can control the line of scrimmmage against whatever collection of Five Stars LSU, Alabama, or Georgia has.

I want Leach or Satterfield.

Give me Mike Houston at ECU. Man has turned around every program he’s been to and worked his way up the ladder. Shown the extremely rare ability as a defensive minded coach to cater everything he does to the players (triple option at lenoir rhyme and citadel, spread at JMU and an air raid approach at ECU) was the coach at citadel back in 2015, and is a master motivator. That’s the guy I think could work wonders with this program and the level of talent he could pull here.
