Only thing I'll offer is that most of you know I live in Chattanooga. There are some serious UTC fans who hate that Paris is leaving. He was a very good tactician, and was able to recruit well through the portal to fill his needs. UTC would have beaten the shite out of USC last year, and probably the year before that.

He's not who any of us wanted as our first, or fifth, choice. He can be a great fit here, and Tanner can still be a raging dumbass.

Paris isn't Horn. He's not egocentric like Horn was. He's a humble, quiet and calm guy. If anything, he's more like Dave Odom. Uncle Dave was much more successful with transfers, so there is some logic there. He's not going to embarrass the school like Martin did, and he's not going to generate negative press through berating players. He's a teacher.

Have no idea if he'll be able to Crack the AAU nut. But, he's still a damned good basketball coach.

Hope you are right

It just pains me that we can’t be a once every 2 or 3 years tourney team

We went once in frank’s 10 seasons. That is awful

I'm in my early 30s.

We've been four times that I've been alive. That's unacceptable.

I don't even remember watching the games in the 90s (or I mentally blocked them out at a young age, lucky me).

I was in class in middle school in 2004 so didn't get to see that loss.

I've only ever watched us play in the NCAA tournament once and that was the Final 4 run.

In hindsight I wish I had just taken the trip from DC to NYC but I was still new to DC and getting career stuff in order.

That's always been my expectations. The way the NCAAT is currently aligned, SC should make the NCAAT once every 2-3 years (as a minimum). I'm 61 and SC basketball has been a huge disappointment ever since Frank McGuire.

Lamont Paris may not be any better than Martin but I'm willing to give him a chance. It was well past time to part ways with Martin. Obviously I'd have preferred a home run hire, but he's who we've got now. I'm getting pretty old and I'd like to see a good 5-10 years of SC basketball before I get too old to enjoy it (ha ha).
Surprise me Coach Paris.

Clemson has more tourneys than us since 2000!!!!
shite they have more than us since 2010!!

We can all agree they’re a better football program, not even close
But basketball there’s nothing different between us
Both the same shitty teams that lose our best state recruits to NC or other schools

There's definitely no reason why we shouldn't be at the level that Purnell had Clemson at.

Has the university even officially announced the hire? Seems weird.

Exactly....BJ would have at least brought the "he's one of us" excitement to the program. Paris is not exciting in any way and he will have to win big to bring the fans on board. I hope that happens but I am not seeing it. If it was between Paris and BJ...it's BJ hands down !

I disagree. I think if he can consistently make the tournament everyone will love him.

And I don’t think that’s considered “winning big”

Idk .
The more and more I think about this, the year after we made the final four, barely anyone showed up to the banner raising home game.
I guess you could say we need to establish more years of winning
But just get to the tournament and should care

That is the definition of winning big......making the tournament is not the standard in most programs. It would be "winning big" to make it every couple of years. That would be BIG.....especially for our program who has to measure it by the decades....

I remember talking to my buddy about that when it happened.

I think that had more to do with just awful planning by the university and/or the basketball program.

I don't recall there being any announcement or promotion or anything to let anyone know that a celebration would be happening. I think more people showed up in front of the CL when they came home from NYC after beating UF in the Elite 8. I think it would have been different if there had more awareness of the event.

Fans will come in large numbers if it's clear the team is good. It took a while but there were plenty of big crowds for that Final 4 season and throughout Horn's 1 good year.

What is also forgotten was Frank berating fans for not buying enough tickets. Is it the admins fault for not marketing it, absolutely. Some of the blame still lies on his shoulders. Love her or hate her, Dawn is a marketing and brand genius. I remember thinking, those two went two totally different ways with marketing their product. Dawn was big on "fams" and challenges. fun ways to get people out and to care. She filled the venue. Frank pouted and fussed at fans pubicly. it just seemed to cast a cloud on the program. Their careers went different directions.

I also wanna say fans knew the recruiting sucked and with how much talent we lost that we were going to struggle. It needed Frank to connect with fans

Frank hated being second fiddle to football.
I’ve said this before but he’s definitely perfect for a school with no big FBS football program

Word is he’s in talks with UMass.

That makes more sense. Although I figured he’d end up at some Big East team.

here's Frank whining about fans again after beating UMass in 2017.

quote:

Following USC’s 76-70 victory over Massachusetts on Saturday inside Colonial Life Arena, the Gamecocks coach was anything but satisfied.

“The job me and my staff are doing right now is pathetic,” Martin said. “We regressed this week. We’re a worse basketball team today than we were eight days ago – and that’s my job to make sure that doesn’t happen.”

Carolina is now 6-2. Saturday’s game was its first in Columbia in 19 days. The Gamecocks were less than sharp in front of a barely half-full arena, something Martin also noted in his post-game observations.

“There must have been some kind of a golf tournament or an evaluation of seventh-round offensive linemen or something in town because obviously our fans decided that showing up here today wasn’t that important,” Martin said. “But I can’t worry about fans. I got to get my team right. We’re soft. We had a bad week. We have not played worth a crap this week. “And that’s my job, to get us to play the game the right way.”

The announced crowd was 10,382. That’s the fewest at CLA since 10,088 showed up last December for USC-Lander. Nonetheless, Carolina didn’t put on a great show. The Gamecocks made three of 15 3-point attempts and missed 12 of their 29 free throw attempts.
