Great writeup by P&C regarding the 50th anniversary of the Carolina Coliseum.

Random thoughts on the Coliseum:

- Man, do I personally miss that venue.
- Played on the court when I was a kid at Eddie Fogler's basketball camp and still have a picture of me as a kid with Antonio Grant. (Grant buzzer beater vs Cincy in 1998)
- It just had a special feel that the CLA just can't duplicate which I think is in part because the CLA was built with hosting other events in mind and just comes off as one of the more generic arena designs you can have. I also think it's a bit too large, but that's neither here nor there.
- Would love if they found a way to play like 1 game a year in the Coliseum.
- The view coming into Columbia from Knox Abott with the Coliseum in the foreground of the skyline was the best view of the city, but that's no longer possible with those new apartment buildings up in the Colisem parking lots.
- The Coliseum was a great 30 second reprieve from the weather (hot or cold) walking from the CLA parking lots to campus as a student.

You and I were at the same camp it seems. I went three years in a row during the mid-90’s. I loved the Coliseum. My best memory of that building was the 1997 OT win vs. Kentucky. My dad and I came down for the game that night, and it was insane in there. Dickie V was in the house and our student section was nuts. I slept on the drive home, and luckily, my mom let me go to school late the next day.

Impossible now.

I remember like 5 years ago the WBB team had to play a game there because of a conflict with the CLA. However, it is impossible now that they have torn out so many seats.

I know there have been some lofty plans to turn it into a new student union, but nothing has come of it. If it is just going to sit empty or just persist as a practice court for the bball teams and some classroom space, I'd rather them just tear it down.

lol

It is an enormous, old, seriously underused facility at one of the prime intersections in the city. The university could do so much more with that piece of land (like give the bball team a proper practice facility).

You know what... I bet you some Roman said this about the original Colosseum... and here it is about 2,000 years later and a Wonder of the World. I fully expect The Coliseum to reach that status by the year 4,019.

Also, I remember when I first saw renderings for the new business school and thought it was the end of the Coliseum. To this day I can't believe they squeezed that huge thing on where that parking lot of about 25 spaces used to be.
