congratulations to Meyers for officially killing USC's chances by bringing in Fiori. he should have never been allowed back on the active roster this year based on his past performance.

but before that, here's Widener's 3rd strike to get out the of 4th inning scoreless (with runners on 2nd & 3rd) - which was called a ball.

Gamecocks should never ever schedule these fricks from chapel hole ever again in any sport. there's a reason USC told the acc to burn in hell.

Just when you thought you'd seen the worst ump in college baseball history ... along comes this douchebag behind the plate tonight who must have some connection to UNC ... worst, most inconsistent lop sided balls and strikes calls I can ever remember.

He literally destroyed Widener's groove and completely changed the complexion of this game. That pitch above was one of the obvious ones of course ... but there were four or five others just as bad ... and they led to those first three runs without a doubt. After that it was all over.

I'm looking through the media guide right now ... that may very well have been the worst loss in our history. Certainly the worst I can remember.

ETA: Went back a long ways ... got tired of looking. I tried to scan every loss for the past twenty years at least and could not find a loss even close to being as bad as the one tonight.

It was our worst loss since a 16-1 loss to Auburn in 2007 in Columbia. That was a Game #1 loss, with Harris Honeycutt on the mound for us: even weirder, it was Honeycutt's first loss that season (7-1), and his first loss ever as a Gamecock (was 15-0 until that game).

We responded by winning the next 2 gms 10-1 and 18-4, to take the series. Hopefully we respond in like fashion against UGA.

Sheeesh ... I hope we respond well. We need to sweep Georgia now, but we gave the ACC some kind of bragging rights combined with the loss to the sheep humpers.

Don't know how I missed that Auburn game but I see it now on page 198, middle column half way down the page.

I saw the 1-12 loss to Vandy earlier in that year in the same column and noted it ... but missed that Auburn game somehow.

Owell.

It only really sucks because it was to UNC ... and because they shut us out.

I hate those fricking tarholios probably worse than the taterheads.

I'm starting to believe Destino is hurt worse than I was told he was.

The hell is going on with John Jones? He's really struggling lately

He's swinging early and often, hoping to hit the lottery by accident - then he watches strike 3 pitches go right down the home plate's gullet. He's totally lost right now, not seeing pitches or looking for the right ones to swing at.

Perhaps the book is out on him a bit now that he's got some games under his belt - perhaps opposing pitching coaches are adjusting to him, and he's yet to make his counter-adjustments. Perhaps it's just a case of needing to get one good hit, and then he's back in the swing of things.

Hopefully it happens soon. If it wasn't for all the balls and walks and errors from UGA tonight - if we needed to actually rely on our hitting to win this game, we'd be in big trouble....

Clarke brought his A-Game however. The complete-game win was a fortunate break for us. We're still 11-2 in SEC play, which I believe is the best start ever through 13 SEC games for the program....

Jones is definitely slumping ... he'll work his way out of it.

Schmidt looked back to previous form ... we needed that. We really need a sweep.

This is the time, right now, for Holbrook to shake up the batting order a bit. I'd really prefer to see him do it in this 2nd game vs UGA. He'd show me a lot by doing so. It's what Tanner would do.

... you called it Rooster. Mooney out with a hip-pointer tonight from his slide into home last night.

Jones has had a rough stretch all the way back to game 3 in Nashville. 2 hits, 2 rbi, 2 runs scored back to that game. he had actually avoided the dreadful "K" for the most part, until last night in Athens.

We need a big win in a desperate way today. Bats have gone ice cold, and we need to snap out of this funk soon.

edit - shitty last two games in Athens.

updated SEC-only stats - some ugly offensive numbers outside of 2 hitters.

the good -

Cone having an All-SEC campaign now hitting .379 with 22 hits in 58 AB. he had the 7th best avg heading into this weekend with a .370 avg. his OB% was 2nd best in SEC play at .491 and he's raised it to .500 after this weekend. 13 walks and just 5 strikeouts. Gene was top 3 in runs scored at 17 and he added 2 more after today as well.

Destino is hitting .350 with 14 hits in 40 AB. 2 doubles, 8 rbi, 6 runs scored in technically 12 SEC games and 11 starts. both he and Cone have had some incredible catches in the outfield this season. each had a great catch today in Athens.

the bad -

there's a huge dropoff after Cone & Destino as far as batting averages in conference games.

Bride .268 (15/56)
Jones .267 (16/60)
D-T-W .245 (13/53)
Cullen .220 (9/41)
Mooney .217 (10/46)
Arendas .200 (10/50)
Tolbert .196 (11/56)

the really ugly stat is strikeouts...

22 K, 2 walks, 50 AB - Arendas
16 K, 9 walks, 53 AB - D-T-W
12 K, 7 walks, 56 AB - Bride
12 K, 9 walks, 60 AB - Jones
11 K, 6 walks, 43 AB - Cullen
10 K, 4 walks, 21 AB - Hopkins
8 K, 2 walks, 40 AB - Destino
7 K, 1 walks, 46 AB - Mooney
5 K, 13 walks, 58 AB - Cone
5 K, 5 walks, 56 AB - Tolbert

Mooney & Tolbert are putting the ball into play even though their averages are low. those 2 have also reached base a combined 13 additional times with 6 walks and 7 hbp.

the sad fact is georgia was the 2nd worst pitching staff, only to Arkansas, heading into this weekend. they had given up 92 runs, issued 77 walks, and had the most wild pitches through 12 league games with 19. they were also the worst overall fielding team at .957.

I didn't get to watch the games this weekend, but I'm disappointed to learn the results. We can't lose gimme series in the SEC. That's most unfortunate, Holbrook better get the bats fixed, I'm still of the opinion that if he doesn't make Super's he needs to go.

Our offense looked better tonight, against Furman in Greenville, now that he finally shook up the order .... which he should have done before the UGA series.

It's major college coaching 101 and it's what pisses me off about Holbrook ... he always waits too long to take corrective action.

Well ... UGA just took game one from UF in Gainesville and did us a huge favor in the process.

We really need to sweep Mizzou ... badly.

The team came back from a scary start to the game and Clarke Schmidt not having his A Game to win the opening game to the series 8-5. It was sorta similar to how USC won the opener in the UGA series, with the other team assisting the Gamecocks with multiple errors and walks on what otherwise was a fairly anemic hitting night. But then the Gamecock bats got to the Missouri bullpen at the end with some insurance hits and runs.

Hopefully we have good hitting games Saturday and Sunday, and Braden and Adam have good outings...
