New target, Western Kentucky Commit 2* QB Steven Duncan:
quote:
“Coach (Shawn) Elliott and coach (Kurt) Roper have reached out to my coaches,” the 6-foot-5, 230-pound Duncan said. “They are very interested in taking two quarterbacks, and they want the second quarterback to be a pocket passer and believed I could do the job. They are coming down to see me later this week.”
“I haven't been to South Carolina in a while, but I like that their coaches have a good history.”
“I plan to take an official visit there, and I plan to talk about that when they come down this week. I am committed to Western Kentucky so I will be taking a visit there, too, on January 22.”
“Where I am happy, whatever program has the best outlook for me and my major, and how I fit in around the other guys. I will know where I want to go after my official visits.”

New OV upcoming for a 3* DT from south Florida. We offered him back in May, but had very little contact that I can recall reading about.
https://247sports.com/Player/Aaron-Thompson-53811
https://www.hudl.com/athlete/2642151/aaron-thompson
From his HUDL bio.
6'4", 265 lbs, 4.78 40 yd, 36" vertical, 315 lb bench, 535 lb squat.
(wow, if any of that is true, that's really impressive. The only registered SPARQ score I could find on him was from May '14 (so almost 2 years ago) and it was a 5.1 40.)
He plays at Dillard High School, which is a 6A school in south Florida. They play against some big competition, (Stoneman Douglas, St Thomas Aquinas, Monarch and Plantation.)
I watched his highlight reel, I couldn't find his recorded stats, but from what I saw in the highlight reel:
38 TFL's
10 Sacks
2 Forced Fumbles
1 INT
..and at least 3 spin moves.
I don't know if he's a legit 4.78 guy, but he can move for a big man, he is not slow. I also didn't see a 36" vertical on there, but he can leap. A few times he left his feet trying to take away the QB's pass angle, so he has to learn not to do that against mobile QB's. He needs to work more on his hand techniques to disengage quality blockers, but that's completely coachable.
I have no idea why he is a mid 3*, from what I saw he should be rated much higher, and with his offer list, I would expect that as well. He is tenacious. He gets after the football wherever it is on the field. He is extremely disruptive, a lot of TFL's. He has a a quick jump off the line and can find angles/holes to the QB/RB. He pursues the ball, even when it's moving down field. His INT was great, b/c he read that the QB was pressured, and dropped back in angle to make the play. He wraps up well and takes the players to the ground. He has good range/arm length. He just seems really tough, I can understand why Muschamp has recruited him since he was at uf.
***Also found some bonus footage from the Final 5 OL vs DL at the NFTC combine in Miami from this past summer.
Gamecocks Kier Thomas goes up against one of the best OL in the county #Top40 player, 4* Tedarrell Slaton, and then Aaron Thompson absolutely destroys the guy he's going up against.

Most unfortunate, I had already penciled him in as a starter next year,
TRob/Muschamp have had a bunch of guys show up and produce YR 1 even when not EEs. Marcus Roberson and VH3 at UF were standout FR CBs and Carlton Davis at Auburn as an absolute stud (best CB season for AU in 5 years)
For Carlton Davis
In first 3-4 games, Davis was always in position just couldn't have it "click" to make a play on the ball giving up receptions. Then he figured it out and absolutely shut down opponent's best WRs. Had 3 INTs and easily earned All SEC FR honors

Addition to the above, expect to see huge improvement throughout the season at DB. Auburn's defensive backfield looked lightyears ahead of anything we've had in a long long time when TRob got time.
Recruiting question
How do ya'll feel about Marlon Character? I guess he moved his OV to this weekend 1/15. He is extremely tight with TRob (initial flip) but I guess his GF or something is going to AU?

I don't think he's a lock to flip back, especially if his GF is going to the other school. Although, maybe we could flip her too.
I wish the guys could understand how much tail there is in college, and how chasing new tail is half the fun. I dated a girl my Sr year in HS, we were both going to go to SC. I broke up with her the summer before b/c I knew I was going to college and it was going to be a show.

I don't think GF at a school means that much. I'm sure it helps more that she is whispering/suggesting less that she'll be there
So y'all feel good about being in it with Character ? Also is 1/15 weekend just a big recruiting weekend? Trying to figure out why he moved his OV

There are a TON of recruits that will be here.

We have about 15 guys coming in at the moment, but they keep adding people. 7 current commits though, so they could be trying to get him to bond with some of the current commits also on OV. We don't have any currently committed recruits coming in on the 29th.
Usually, I would like my school to have the last OV.

Character was originally committed to USC so he's familiar with what the program offers. If I'm not mistaken the 22nd is supposed to be a huge OV weekend for us but it looks like now this weekend of the 15th is growing big too. I know of at least one who was scheduled to OV on the 22nd weekend but has a SAT scheduled that weekend and has to re-schedule. Don't know if other prospects are dealing with that...
We look to have 10+ OVs for the 15th and for the 22nd, and have 4-5 already scheduled for the 29th. But there are still others trying to schedule. I don't know what our maximum # is for OVs currently....

3* DT Aaron Thompson sets OV for the 29th.
quote:
“I am visiting Maryland this week and South Carolina on January 29. I might visit Tennessee but I'm not sure.”
“The new coaches at South Carolina have been recruiting me since I was a freshman when they were at Florida. They are great when it comes to defense.”
“I’m not sure when I will commit, but it will be to the coaches I have the best relationship with.”

Haaaa nice! I wasn't holding out any hope that we'd land this guy.

Hey if we get any news today, you guys mind sharing on here. Freaking web blockers on work comp but some how the rant snuck through. TYIA

I had not idea that this was going to be how it worked out. There was a lot of smoke about him EE'ing to kentucky, and I wasn't sure if he submitted his EE paperwork to SC. When he was stalling his enrollment, I thought that we were out of it. Glad he's a Gamecock now. Got to build that Archer HS pipeline.

I think it was more of a scholastic thing from what I hear that wasn't cleared up until recently.

I watched Kobe Smith's highlight reel
https://www.hudl.com/athlete/2911221/highlights/302382421/v2
He played NT in a 3-4. The thing about that position is you have to be about the best athlete on the field and certainly the best on the line of scrimmage to play that position really well. He dominated a lot of the interior OL he was playing, but not all those guys were going to be D1 or even college ball, he was just a lot bigger than the other kids out there.
He was strong enough to push the OL back, even on double teams, he helped to collapse the pocket. He also showed really great hustle on finding the ball and pursuing it anywhere on the field. He took some nice angles as well to get in front of the play as it developed. He made a few headsup plays too with the Fumble Recoveries. He is not fast, I didn't think he was all that quick either, even for a NT. 3* is about right for his rating. He's got a good amount of bad weight to lose, he'll be a developmental guy and will need 2 years in Dillman's S&C program. I would expect him to RS this season. I did feel like he hustled, but it was a highlight reel, so they wouldn't have shown any loafs. He has the frame to get to the low 300's and still hold weight, but he just has to get the body fat% under control as well as work on agility drills. If that 405 lb bench press and 505 lb squat is legit, he must be a good worker in the weight room.

What is the latest news on John Simpson? I would LOVE to steal him away from those turds in the upstate.

Shawn Elliot and Muschamp are supposed to meet with Simpson today I believe.

Confirmed that they are meeting with John Simpson today. TRob is meeting with 5 star DB Kristian Fulton.
