Coach Richt/Kirby trajectories.

I'm sure that I'm not the first one to realize this, but earlier it popped in my head that we also lost to Saban twice in less than 12 months in 2003, Coach Richt's third season. Somewhat eery to go along with the other Coach Smart/Coach Richt overlaps.
The records and rankings during the last poll before the bowl games are played
2001 - 8-3 // No. 16
2002 - 12-1 // No. 3
2003 - 10-3 // No. 11 (lost to Saban SECCG)
2016 - 7-5 // NR
2017 - 12-1 // No. 3
2018 - 11-2 // No. 5 (lost to Saban SECCG)
...Also worth nothing that 2003 and 2018 both were supposed to be slight rebuilds while 2002 and 2017 each had a good deal of senior leadership and NFL guys.
...2004 turned out to be a turd of a season. Georgia got some measure of revenge on Saban and LSU and won in Athens by 30 points. But then we lost to a really half arse Tennessee team and had to watch them play in Atlanta.
The 2004 team reminded me a lot of the 2008 team. Both were supposed to be swinging dick teams but both were just a little off and never clicked and never seemed really hungry. Probably one too many upperclassmen with their shite already half packed and thinking about the NFL Combine.
The 2019 team also is supposed to be a swinging dick team for us. 2004 we started out No. 3 and 208 we started out No. 1. 2019 the over/under would probably be around 2.5. The reason I don't think that we have a repeat of 2004 isn't necessarily due to the makeup of our coaches. Coach Richt was still really competitive and maniacal and wanted to win really badly at that point in his career. The burnout and complacency didn't hit till later.
The reason why I think we'll avoid any 2004 style BS next season is recruiting. Imo all of the young dudes we have will keep the older players on their toes and thinking more about losing playing time than the NFL combine.
Average recruiting score:
2002 - 86.5
2003 - 86.4
2004 - 89.8
2017 - 92.2
2018 - 94.2
2019 - 93.2
...For all of the the Georgia Sports Board members who are getting taped up right now to go in the gym and bench press 600 pounds with their pecker and train for their next MMA championship fight, apologies for making a post more than 2 sentences long. I actually most enjoy message boards when there is data and insight instead of cute little one liners and super witty GIFs of B list celebrities making super cute and silly faces hee hee hee

Are you and a DawGirl married?

The early Richt years were awesome. The early Kirby years have been a little better. There are two questions:
-Will Kirby be able to sustain this level of success
-Will he be able to get over the hump and win a title
Only time will tell the answers.

The level of recruiting for UGA under Kirby is the same as Bama’s.
Richt never had that same level and coaching is much more disciplined.
With those things combined, it will sustain our success for years to come.
That is why you see a two year streak of no SEC east loses and also winning by double digits.
We are Bama in the East.

Kirby has already won a title, just not the ultimate title but it will come.

2019 and 2020. Have to win a national title in that window or else the momentum will start to die.
The Kirby era is fueled by recruiting. Will need some legitimate hardware to keep up the recruiting at this pace.

So did Mark Richt by year 3!

Beyond doing a better job recruiting, Kirby does a better job with roster management. Gone are the days of having as many scholarship players as a USCw team on probation with scholarship restrictions. He’s losing to Alabama teams that are better than us. Let’s have this discussion after his fifth year when he’s had a couple years with his own recruits.

I am having the discussion now because of the following:
1) Talent that has been recruited.
2) Talent coming in.
3) Our record
4) our dismantling of all the SEC east competition for the last 2 years.
Richt did none of that, it’s not close and you NegaDawgs can try to compare all you want.
It may help you sleep at night with that mindset but you can gtfo out of here with that bullshite.

You mean like SECG trophy, Rose bowl trophy and Natty appearance?
Kirby isn’t going anywhere nor is the talent going to disappear.
Even Richt recruited well in a 6-7 season. Tells you all you need to know about kids wanting to come to UGA

Technically in 2002 we would have made the playoffs if they existed yet, but I get your point. Plus it is a different era of college football nowadays that the SEC has a stranglehold on the others as best conference

Don’t mind me. I’m just observing
Notes:
-compulsively frames positives as potential negatives
-has no idea he/she does it
-possibly addicted to dopamine rush received from chronic complaining
-a blame junkie craves failure but will settle for pity when in need of a frown fix
Very fascinating

I think Donnan left Richt some pretty good talent, especially on the OL..Don't think Richt left the same level of talent (notwithstanding the obvious stars that turned this thing around in Smart's 2nd year).

Richt NEVER recruited the big uglies like Kirby. This OL and incoming DL is a sight to behold, bama level

I think the coaching staff overall has a lot more cohesion than it did with Richt. Richt's defense did well with Van Gorder but it was a huge fall-off when he left. Richt was also the OC I was constantly scratching my head at some of the performances. People talk about the Bobo years but he was also the OC in 2009 and 10 when the offense struggled. Kirby has shown he is a guy who can build a system - coaches will move on but we'll just add another coach who buys into the system. I guess in some ways Chaney could be the Van Gorder of the Smart regime since Kirby is a former DC.
