I always heard that we never offered because South Carolina and Florida were strongly opposed and wanted to be the only SEC schools in their respective states. That, plus the fact that it would really not expand the TV market footprint.

And that made it all the more funny when we admitted Texas despite A&M publicly saying basically the same thing.

I have heard that Bobby Bowden refused the SEC and that Florida and South Carolina raised hell about either of their rivals joining idk how true it is. Regardless 16 is more than enough and CFB would become a regional sport if only the SEC won every year. I honestly think that Notre Dame will join the ACC before anything like that happens.

FSU did. They heavily considered it but Bowden decided it would be a harder path and wanted no part of it. It's on record and a google search should turn some articles up although it's been a while since I read those. Clemson, I have no idea about. Not sure they were ever considered.

Here's Bowden on it:

quote:

“I felt that it was too difficult to win through the SEC to win a national championship,” Bowden said. “I felt like our best route would be to go through the ACC and that did prove out to be correct. But, I don’t know if we could have made it through the SEC.”

Clemson should’ve left the ACC like they were supposed to with South Carolina.

Their first chance was in 1971, when we left. They said they would and didn't. It left SC in the doldrums of sports from then until, well now.

Yet another reason to hate them.

If Clemson had not been to 5 of the 6 Playoffs, won two national titles and play in two, Beat Alabama twice, won two BCS Bowls in the last decade then I would think looking for greener pastures would be something to consider.

I hope the SEC goes to 20+ teams to create even more parody that's about to happen.

FSU joined the ACC in l990---but
15-years later, Bowden went on record as saying
if the SEC offered, there's no way FSU could
refuse. This was while the SEC was talking
expansion and FSU was one of the schools contacted.

I'm afraid due to the way it is now, college football has become a niche sport. Dying interest right now due to just a handful of teams that can compete at the top

What I’ve always heard as well. SC fans like to hem and haw about we left them at the alter with their leaving the ACC, but reality is they need someone to blame for sucking and being an independent alone.

Contrary to popular belief, a lot of us actually want to, and have wanted to, be in the SEC. we’re out of place in the basketball focused ACC. Not sure about the administrations desires.

This is factual.

If we're being honest no one will deny Clemson success. Being short sided in your long-term view kills conferences. The ACC is in an atrocious TV deal that will handicap the ability to capitalize on any success they have in their athletic programs. Dabo ability to keep his staff together has allowed Clemson to stay relevant. Now in the near when their counterparts are making 2× in other conferences, it will be very difficult to get proven coaching talent.

Oh, I agree the ACC TV deal is horrible now. It was created at a time not-too-long ago when NIL and the transfer portal was not in play. I'm sure lawyers are looking for loopholes to modify or get out of the deal. It's my understanding that should a new team be added to the conference the GOR would have to be reworked or should the conference fold up or merge would be another way to terminate.

You hit the nail on the head with Dabo. He may not be an X's and O's man, but he definitely takes care of his coaches to the point where they won't leave unless it's a great opportunity. They are paid very well to coach a position of one side of the ball. The moral of that story is most top programs can win with the right people at the helm.

Florida State is a good example. They have the brand, history and recruiting geographic advantage and Jimbo killed that program by bringing in edgy players that he looked the other way when they fricked up and the admin brings in horrible replaces and that program will be down for a long time.

My point being that money alone isn't going to win titles. If that were the case, Kentucky, South Carolina, Vandy would be competing for league titles. If you have a great campus with the right people a program can win. Clemson doesn't have SEC money but they have enough win at the highest level.

FSU most certainly did, even after we spent over 20 years trying to get them in.

I was a freshman at the time in the when Florida State turned the SEC down, Arkansas was the 11th team. The 'Noles would have been the 12th.
