The Alabama radio guys were having problems sounding all of those words out so we shortened it for them.

Nicest school in the SEC. They even got shut out a bunch of times to make the scores easier as well.

Serious question how many state schools use A&M after their name? For instance, Utah State is the Aggies, but they don't go by Utah State A&M.

This doesn't explain Utah State, but it seems like some that aren't the flagship schools from their states have to distinguish themselves from the actual flagship.
LSU is obviously the flagship school in LA, as there is no University of Louisiana.
Texas A&M has U. of Texas. It is just like Florida A&M which has U. of Florida.
