FCS model would probably be the best overall answer, 24 teams in

So in that case, do away with conference championship games and form mini-conferences, like along division lines?

I think the FCS has automatic-qualifiers from their 10 conferences, and 14 at-large teams.

Yeah, go ahead and drop the conference championship, and go with an 11 or 12 game schedule.

Does anyone care that LSU won the SEC in 2011, or Georgia in 2017? No, not really. Alabama won the national title those years.
You could let the conference champ be the automatic qualifier; set up some tiebreakers, like you have for the divisions... if LSU, Alabama and Auburn all finish 11-1, you gotta pick someone out of that group anyway.

Those 3 NCs must be hard to swallow during the time a team has to prove it on the field. I'm sure your fan base would have given anything to have simply played in a meaningless Bowl Game.
Not sure what you're rambling about here.

If you're talking about LSU- we've had optouts going into bowls. Starters who quit the team after the season, before the bowls.

UGA and Bama both laid eggs in the Sugar, after being out of the title picture in recent years.

I liked the bowls, as they used to be. Was thrilled as a kid when we got to the Orange in 83. Orange bowl doesn't mean nearly as much now, if it's not part of the playoff rotation.

A 24 team field covers most ranked teams, especially if you take away conference championships. Your CUSA, MWC and AAC teams, the champ will be usu ranked in the teens somewhere. If you're Memphis, you are probably thrilled just to get in. If you're LSU at 10-2, you're excited about hosting in the 1st rd, and hoping to get another shot at Alabama.

If you're 8-4, you're on the bubble or out. Wasn't a ton of excitement to go to the Poulan Bowl or wherever, you'd watch but it was pretty meh. Yeah, once it started you'd get into it, but nobody was bristling with anticipation leading into it.

He's not like 105 years old? Wasn't he the AD that hired the Bear?

The article says he's 91.

Hired Bryant at Vandy? Kramer was AD there in the '80s.

Bryant was at Vandy around 1940, before World War II, when he left to join the Navy.

He was already a powerful admin when I was still in grade school and that was a long time ago.

You don't need 12. I would ok with 6. If you're not in the top 6 then better luck next year.

I agree with y'all about the six. One from each power-5 and one slot for SEC runner-up or an undefeated mid-major like UCF that year.

If they do this nonsense, the SEC needs to do away with divisions. Play a 10 game SEC season, 2 ofc, then the top 2 teams meet in Atlanta. The only way to keep an 8-4 team from slipping in on an automatic bid. It will happen one day unless they change it.

Yep.

Look at the past couple years; 2019, LSU was in, and UGA was on the cusp. 2020, Bama was in, and Florida was in consideration.
Go to 12, and both are in for sure. But with a a bad loss in the SEC championship, then one of those teams might be in trouble. Doesn't help the conference at all, doesn't help the team either.

If there's a real question about who's better, go ahead and settle it in the playoffs.
