Best game of this series imo.
UK had upset #1 LSU earlier in the season, but overall I'd say that they underachieved due to injuries; should've been much better than 8-5. UK had Andre Woodson, Rafael Little, Derrick Lock, Keenan Burton, Jacob Tamme and Stevie Johnson on offense plus Wesley Woodyard and Trevard Lindley on defense.
Tennessee was an extremely bipolar team: they waxed Georgia and Arkansas in Knoxville, but were absolutely obliterated by rebuilding Florida and Bama teams on the road. Erik Ainge was a good college QB, Arian Foster was a stud (though underused) and Eric Berry anchored the defense. However, I remember thinking as an outside observer that Phat Phil was living were living on borrowed time; talent level seemed to be declining and the Cutcliffe and Chavis stuff was getting stale. The VOLS finished 10-4, this was their last 10-win season to date.
The VOLS were playing for a trip to Atlanta since they had the tiebreaker over UGA. Kentucky was playing to end a 24 year losing streak to UT.
Tennessee jumped out to a 24-7 lead with some nifty playcalling and UK's unusually bad offense. Then the Wildcats stormed back in epic fashion; unfortunately for them they could only tie the game at 31 and send it to OT after being at the UT 5-yard line down 31-28.
The game ended after a wild 4 OT periods, including Tennessee blocking a 17-yard game-winner by UK. The VOLS finally scored and converted a 2 pt conversion, then stopped UK's own conversion attempt to end the game.
This game had pretty massive repercussions: I have little doubt that UGA would've curbstomped LSU in Atlanta (VOLS lost to LSU's backup QB) and possibly ended Les Miles' career after another disappointing loss. The Dawgs probably would have ended their NC drought against a rebuilding OSU in NOLA. Fulmer didn't save his job in the long run, but bought another season which ended in disaster and him finally being canned.
Great watch even with poor quality

UGA's got nothing on us when it comes to losing to the same team twice with their backup QB in a big game.

Also they kept us saddled with Clue-Les for the next decade, ensuring Bama domination of the West

We had a fantastic, SEC quality first string. Brooks just hadn't built a lot of depth at that point considering we were coming off pretty stiff NCAA penalties from Mumme.
But fricking Lones Sieber.

When people talk about LSU luck, this game is a big part of it.

If Kentucky wins that game, Georgia goes to Atlanta to play LSU and defeats them to play in the national championship game against Ohio State.

Knowing UGA they somehow lose to OSU.

Are you encouraging UGA fans to dick ride Kentucky losing to Tennessee as a reason they can’t win a national championship game? Kentucky has 1 more win over Tennessee since 1980 than UGA has national championships.

What a great game, you can thank Tennessee for keeping 1980 alive

Joker Phillips seemed to be a decent OC for y'all, but man he totally destroyed that foundation that Rich Brooks had carefully, patiently built up from nothing

Somehow he managed to beat Tennessee when Brooks never did but almost killed the program. Joker is an apt name

I was there. Such an overall fun season. Beating LSU and UL, but losing this stupid game.

UK UT 1995
Another flashback to 1995 when Billy Jack Haskins dislocated a shoulder running all over UT's Defense.
Great game, but came up a little short that day too.
