LSU just got in the groove of recruiting big guys for the 3-4 defense. We were getting killed with small nickle guys Miles had. Now we move to the 4-3. We have big guys at the nose tackle position that will move to the DT spot but outside of the starting rotation the depth looks suspect.

ETA: future apology for not shite posting. I’m sure this will fall off the front page by lunch

That’s actually a little inaccurate.. we’ve been recruiting for a 4-3 the past two years. Ed O wants a dominate line up front.

The chess match between new offensive styles and defensive adjustments continues to be one of the most fascinating things about college football.

It's amazing how much the average fan doesn't understand about the intricacies of match-ups and schemes, but when you really delve into it, it's fascinating.

I wish there was more content devoted to Xs and Os, but it's probably hard to get a comparably big audience for it.

Have an upvote.

Always reminds me of Lou Holtz saying "3-4 or 4-3 doesn't matter. Adds up to eleven either way." Must be that new math.

According to a thread on Tiger Rant, this is the updated depth chart for the interior defensive line...

DT
1. Glenn Logan 97 SR
2. Jaquelin Roy 99 FR
3. Jarell Cherry 55 RS SO
4. Eric Taylor 96 FR

NT
1. Tyler Shelvin 72 JR
2. Siaki Ika 62 SO
3. Jacobian Gulliory 90 FR
4. Nelson Jenkins RS SO 47

To my knowledge only the 2 in bold are really true 3-4 NTs. The others are all just defensive tackles. Guillory and Roy are going to be dudes.

Which is why we need to move to about 28 or 29 scholarships and move up to 93 total.

What if Arky hired Paul Johnson
What if Mizzou hires June Jones
And bama keeps recruiting 6-2 235 lb steamrollers.
Too many styles to keep up with for the smaller schools.

They're not wrong. We've got depth but most are young or guys that have done nothing so far. DT is actually pretty good with 3 vets and talented freshmen, nothing unusual. DE is where we know absolutely nothing if what we have.

I’m highly interested in what Ray Parker, Jarrell Cherry, Tk and Ali Gaye can do.

I really want Parker to develop since he’s crossed over from OT in HS to TE to DE.

this is what interested me about lsu's season last year. yeah there were the records and championship but it made a statement about the state of cfb rules. other teams have been working to maximize offensive efficiency and production but lsu took it to another level and at the highest level of competition. they took full advantage of the rules favoring offense. and that's even without repeatedly having linemen downfield on rpo's.

i'm curious to see how defenses adjust and if any rules changes occur to level the playing field because if not, all of cfb is about to turn into spread, up tempo, etc. for example, you could say that once o players are in their stance at the line of scrimmage, they are not allowed to move until the ball is snapped. iow, no more check with me. the o makes the d declare and then changes the play accordingly. HUGE advantage to the offense.

i also think front seven players are going to be more athletic; lighter, faster, can cover wr's and te's in passing routes.

lsu ran crossing routes to perfection. it wasn't the entirety of the offense but they did get some big plays from that. defenses have to figure out a way to counter that.
