I’m sorry to hear Mike Shula is bereaved right now and I wish Don Shula to Rest In Peace.

This also made me realize had we won the 2006 Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa, we would not have ever hired Coach Saban. Mike Shula stays if we win that game. I wish the Shula family peace.

This is how I choose to remember Mike Shula's time in Tuscaloosa.

That block on the reverse was legit!

Hated the way things went for Mike as coach. He was handed a shite sandwich.

My take has always been that Shula did a commendable job at getting the program from point A to point B, but that was all he was ever going to do.

That whole episode proved it's better to pay great money for a short-term recruiter/assistant coach and do a real coaching search the following year than go with a long term investment in a questionable hire. Promoting Joe Kines for an unofficial one year and then hiring Spurrier would've been better than what transpired.

Hahaha, point taken but we are still Alabama football fans first and foremost regardless of bereavement.

Peace be with the family and R.I.P. Don Shula.

But Mike Shula was done after the 2006 debacle against Tennessee.

He just wasn't a head coach type of guy. He is one of the best OC's in the NFL though.

Don was 1 of the greats as a HC & even better father. RIP Coach Shula.
As time & Championships heal the Dubose-Shula dark times, I now choose to remember Mike Shula as the mid 1980's clutch QB.
1985, beating both UGA/AU in the final seconds.
Google both. They are clutch efforts by an underrated former Bama QB.

True....Hiring Joe for that one year should have been the plan. He may have stopped that inside trap. Joe had already filled in for the Hogs when they replace their HC after the 1st game (I think it was the 1st game).

Don Shula was and is the winningest head coach in the NFL. He was just a youngster when he coached the Baltimore Colts and he was of course on the wrong end of Joe Willie's guaranteed win in 1969. But the dude knew his stuff and the Bob Griese and Butch Cassidy/Sundance Kid, Mercury Morris, and No Name Defense were his best teams by far. He just couldn't get Dan Marino/Killer Bees to the big payoff. Dan the man just wanted to sling it and the rules still favored the ground troops. Still a great coach and still the only team in the NFL that ever finished a season undefeated. That Shula would have been a great choice in Alabama.

When Price was fired, we were still in the depths of probation. The Board & President pretty much knew that it was going to be tough to lure an elite coach to UA. We had been a turnstile for head coaches at that point. Shula was basically hired to be a sacrificial lamb and just sustain things until we get a little further down the road. It’s why he was chosen over Croom.

He was handed bigger than a shite sandwich and all things considered he did a great job. His first year he could only sign 14 scholarship players..

But he did manage to sign a great deal of the 2009 NC squad.. Most of the OL, Arenas, Upchurch, McElroy..etc etc.

Did Mike deserve to keep the job? NO! He was never going to get us to the promised land again. But he shouldn't be slammed like many Alabama fans choose to do..

If he ever comes back to Tuscaloosa and I'm in the Stadium..he gets a standing O from me.

He's one of ours and did the best he could do..as a player and our Coach.

Nothing but respect from me

He shouldn’t be slammed but I don’t begrudge anyone who might because of the way his dad continually melted down towards us following the dismissal. Sure Mike isn’t his dad but he could’ve had some dignity and told his dad to let it go.

Always liked Don Shula and his family. He was all class as was his son Mike.
Things didn't work out here for Mike and things turned sour between Alabama and the Shulas. Unfortunately.
But would always be grateful to Mike to have taken the job when no body wanted it. Wish he would re-establish his relationship with Bama in some capacity. He served the University well and to the best of his abilities.
Rest In Peace Don Shula.

This is what pisses me off when people imply that racism was why we didn't hire Croom at that time. The PTB knew we were going to fire whomever we hired with that selection. They were not going to put either themselves, or Croom for that matter, in that doomed to fail scenario. MSU may not have been much better a chance than Bama at the time, but he at least had a chance. They were actually doing Coach Croom a favor.
