Alabama should hire a consulting firm to do a full evaluation of the kicking game

Worst in the nation in a statistic for a decade, during a decade of otherwise dominance is not a fluke. It is a major problem. There is a reason large corporations often hire consultants to solve problems they can't seem to fix internally. You sometimes need outside eyes and perspective to figure out the hidden problems. Saban should be willing to implement any suggested solution at this point. Clearly there is something his program is doing that ruins both walk-on and highly recruited kickers. He needs to change some combination of how they practice, who is recruited, which coaches interact with them and how they interact.

Bad thing is Saban knows the rules better than the refs.

On how to fix it? No. I don't have anywhere near the information I would need to make any suggestions. My suspicion is that Saban is taking an old school approach and coaching or allowing his kickers to be coached from a "team" perspective. Kickers are similar to pitchers. It's such a specialized, compartmentalized skill, with little to no correlation to the rest of the team, that it doesn't need to be coached or practiced from a "team" perspective. It is the ideal football position to study using analytics. Kickers should make kicks, regardless of the circumstances of the game. The less they interact with the rest of the team, the better. Take as much pressure off of them as possible in terms of "letting down the team." They should barely even consider mentally how what they do even affects the team. To a kicker there should be no such thing as a "game winning FG." They should care less about the importance of any individual kick. They should be mental robots who focus only on making each kick. Bama kickers especially shouldn't be making public apologies about missing kicks. That mindset that kickers win or lose games is exactly what causes them to be inconsistent. Anything that can be done to make them feel detached from the outcome of the game and the rest of the team should be done.
I would suggest that the consulting firm shouldn't even be a sports consulting firm. It should be a standard corporate one with no preconceived notions on what a kicking program should look like. Make it completely unbiased and fact based. What do teams that consistently have quality kickers have in common? What does Bama do differently than them?

Not flaming. The common thread is Saban. He coaches through FEAR. That’s fine at every position besides the most fragile psychological position- kicker. Being Saban’s kicker would be a psychological nightmare of pressure and stress.

You just haven’t followed Saban since LSU. He is much more laid back now.

I agree. That is my suspicion also and is likely what a consulting firm would find...that Bama kickers are in such awe and fear of playing for a legendary coach who demands perfection, as well as teammates who follow that mindset, that they mentally can't play without emotion.

It won't help.
Saban is cursed when it comes to kickers. Simple as that.

Think about it- If you miss a block or an assignment you have the next play in “ the process “. If you miss a kick , in your own mind, and with fans, you are a POS that has failed. By contrast-Les Miles kickers always excelled. So much that he featured them in countless game- winning trick plays and huge moments. They did not have that same level of fear of failure because Les loved up on them if they shanked a kick . IMHO - Saban’s coaching style is just too much for kickers.
