I hope there's more to this story.

Arrest a 21 year old for being drunk in public? Is your town sabotaging the team?

So he was drunk and loitered around there. Is there more to it? If not, they should have driven his dumb arse to the dorm and alerted the team or taken him to one of the coaches houses.

Typically establishments don't ask you to leave for minding your own business. That said its just a PI.. a southern right of passage.

I’ve never been a fan of Tuscaloosa PD. They were dicks when I was there.

Unfortunately this is not the way police handle things like this now, athletes or not. I had a couple of encounters with police in HS and college where they technically could have arrested/booked/charged me or friends with some disorderly conduct, public intox, noise violation BS but of course they didn't. They put the fear into us and told us to go home/knock it off, etc and we did.

Now they basically arrest first and then think about circumstances/ask questions later.

If you get arrested for PI you have probably already had several chances to go home

Typically this, or it was disorderly conduct/fighting and the cop is cutting you some slack.

But, college towns have changed a lot in terms of thresholds for tolerance and stricter punishments

Second PI in Oxford for an issue I am working on campus had the kid get an automatic 30 days in jail (suspended 2 years, which seems excessive)

My initial thought is it was just a meand to force kids to lawyer up and get a plea deal/dismissal. Oxford has to employ all of these local lawyers somehow. You can't spit without hitting one.
