I wonder if we could use this to maybe redshirt Malik Willis? If so we would have

Redshirt soph Willis
Redshirt frosh gatewood (with playing time)
Fresh Nix

In the 2019

So we can put our back ups in on scrub weekends to get them experience on game day and redshirt them

We could. We won't. We'll still play the starters. But we could, and that's what is important.

When we are up by 3 touchdowns against UGA and Bama this year, thats when you would play the redshirt players.

... you don't get 1000 yard rushers that way.

Instead you get 1000 yard rushers who are broke dick for the championship game.

I really like the change. Getting younger players more playing time will help coaches evaluate personnel more effectively than just watching them in practice. It should also make teams a little deeper near the end of the season when injuries start to add up.

It's a change, yes, but its more of a change BACK because that's the way it used to be.

Except that I think maybe the old rule that they did away with restricted the players "time" in that year to the first 3 or 4 games of the year?

Can bowl games be included in the 4?

Pretty sure it was the first 3 games of the season. Any appearance after the third game used a season of eligibility, even if the player didn't appear in three games total.

I seem to recall that it was still considered a 'medical redshirt' for NCAA purposes - teams would play true frosh in the first three games, then list them as 'injured' for the remainder of the season. I don't think the NCAA required any medical proof.
